Good Kid, the Toronto indie rock band fronted by Cohere co-founder Nick Frosst, has built a substantial audience—but the available figures do not show that it is “almost as successful” as the AI company. TechCrunch reported 2.3 million monthly Spotify listeners for the band and a $5.5 billion valuation for Cohere in September 2024. Those are different measures, not a like-for-like comparison, and neither figure is a current verified count.
Who is Nick Frosst?
Nick Frosst co-founded Cohere with Aidan Gomez and Ivan Zhang, and he is the lead vocalist of Good Kid. TechCrunch reported in September 2024 that Frosst worked full time at Cohere while performing with the band. He described the balance plainly: “Cohere is my life’s work,” he said, adding that music was something he could do to unwind and relax.

Frosst also said the two pursuits complemented each other. Playing music, he told TechCrunch, helped clear his mind and gave him dedicated time to focus. That is his account of the relationship between the work, rather than evidence that the band and company operate on comparable measures of success.
How Good Kid started
Good Kid began as a hobby among university friends at the University of Toronto in 2015. The band released its first single, “Nomu,” at the end of that year. Frosst told TechCrunch the group had modest expectations: “We just wanted to create something that we liked,” he said of the early release, which did better than the members expected.

TechCrunch describes Good Kid as an indie rock band made up of programmers and notes early influences including Bloc Party and Two Door Cinema Club. In an October 2025 interview with atVenu, guitarist Jacob Tsafatinos discussed a wider set of touchstones, including indie rock, pop punk, post-punk and Japanese rock. These are descriptions from the band and its coverage, not a single fixed genre definition.
What the success figures actually measure
The striking comparison comes from two separate TechCrunch figures published on September 15, 2024:
Rank #2
| Subject | Reported figure | What it measures |
|---|---|---|
| Good Kid | 2.3 million monthly Spotify listeners, reported by TechCrunch in September 2024 | A snapshot of the band’s audience on one streaming service; listener totals change over time. |
| Cohere | $5.5 billion valuation, reported by TechCrunch in September 2024 | A company valuation, not an audience count or a measure of the band’s revenue. |
TechCrunch also reported that Cohere had raised more than $970 million in venture capital by that September 2024 profile. Funding raised is yet another measure: it is not the company’s valuation, revenue, or profit.
Putting the Spotify audience beside Cohere’s valuation makes for a memorable profile, but it cannot establish that Good Kid is nearly as successful as Cohere. One number concerns monthly listeners on a platform; the other is an investor valuation. The available figures do not provide Good Kid’s revenue, Cohere’s current valuation, or a shared measure that would support a direct ranking.

Good Kid’s milestones beyond streaming
The band’s reach has also shown up in live opportunities and industry recognition. TechCrunch reported that Good Kid opened for Portugal. The Man on a Canadian tour in fall 2023, received a 2024 Juno nomination for breakthrough group and played Lollapalooza in Chicago in August 2024. The profile said its Lollapalooza set was scheduled for 1:45 p.m. on the festival’s final day.
At the time of that 2024 TechCrunch interview, Frosst said the band practiced twice a week for two hours. That is a detail from that period, not a statement about its current schedule.

How the band presents itself
Good Kid’s visual identity is closely tied to illustration. Tsafatinos told atVenu in October 2025: “Our artwork never features the band it’s always an illustration, because we really, really love expressing our music through illustration and characters.” The same interview reports that the band sells illustrated merchandise and branded bottle-cap pins.
