Look Back, the 2024 animated adaptation of a one-shot manga by Chainsaw Man creator Tatsuki Fujimoto, had a 100% Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer from 26 critic reviews on October 8, 2026. That score is a dated snapshot—not a permanent rating or proof that every critic gave the film the same score.

What does Look Back’s 100% Rotten Tomatoes score mean?

Rotten Tomatoes listed Look Back at 100% on the Tomatometer from 26 reviews when checked October 8, 2026. The Tomatometer reflects the share of counted critic reviews that are classified as positive; it does not mean every critic awarded a perfect score. Rotten Tomatoes also listed a 98% Popcornmeter from 500+ verified ratings on that date. The Tomatometer and Popcornmeter are separate measures, and their scores and counts can change. Rotten Tomatoes’ title listing displays both.

What is Look Back about?

The story follows Fujino, a popular student who draws comics for her class newspaper, and Kyomoto, a classmate who rarely attends school but is gifted at drawing. Kyomoto’s work provokes Fujino’s competitiveness; their shared interest in manga becomes the basis for a changing relationship. That premise keeps the focus on the two artists and their creative ambitions without giving away later developments.

Is Look Back by the creator of Chainsaw Man?

Yes. Look Back adapts Fujimoto’s manga of the same name. Fujimoto is also the creator of Chainsaw Man, but Look Back is a separate story, not a Chainsaw Man spin-off. The film was directed and adapted by Kiyotaka Oshiyama, who is also credited with screenplay and character design by distributor GKIDS. GKIDS’ film page lists the adaptation and staff credits.

How the short manga became a film

The source was a 143-page one-shot first published on Shonen Jump+ in July 2021. Avex’s production interview describes the relatively short source and the 58-minute film length as considerations for a commercial theatrical release. The interview also reports that the team saw the runtime as potentially useful for theater scheduling; that is the production team’s account, not a general rule about short animated films.

Production staff member Ryo Ohyama described the finished duration simply: “In the end, it became a 58-minute film.” Co-producer Kazuhito Matsumura said, “We used a unique technique to preserve the lines from the animators’ original drawings directly in the final film.” These comments help explain the adaptation’s production choices without suggesting that its approach is standard across anime.

Release dates and runtime depend on the listing

The Japanese Film Database records a Japanese release on June 28, 2024, with a runtime of 58 minutes. Rotten Tomatoes lists an October 4, 2024 limited U.S. theatrical release and a November 7, 2024 streaming date; those dates refer to its U.S. listing. Runtime records differ: the Japanese Film Database gives 58 minutes, while Rotten Tomatoes lists 1 hour 15 minutes. The available listings do not explain whether the difference reflects a version or a different runtime definition.

Where can you watch Look Back?
