Cheryl Burke has said that body-image struggles began before Dancing With the Stars and intensified under television scrutiny. She has also described physical effects from years of professional dancing, including arthritis. In a 2026 first-person account, Burke discussed therapy, sobriety and how she sees herself now. These are her reported experiences, not a diagnosis established by medical records.
What Cheryl Burke has said about body dysmorphia
Burke has described body-image difficulties that predated her television career. In a June 2026 first-person essay, she traced pressure to childhood dance settings and said public attention to her body on television magnified it: “No wonder I developed body dysmorphia. I had the seeds of it before TV, but this multiplied it by a million.” Glamour, June 3, 2026
Her account distinguishes the roots of the struggle from the added scrutiny of appearing on television. It does not establish that the show caused a clinical condition, and her experience should not be generalized to dancers as a group.
What she has said about the physical toll of professional dance
In a 2021 interview, Burke said years of professional dancing had resulted in arthritis as well as body dysmorphia. Good Morning America, September 14, 2021 reported her remarks about the physical and mental demands of a long dance career. Speaking about continuing to perform at 37, she said, “The fact that I’m 37 and still sambaing out there and shimmying is pretty unheard of.” These are Burke’s descriptions of her own health, not independent medical findings.

What Burke has shared about sobriety and therapy
In her 2026 account, Burke described a past period of nightly drinking and said she has been sober for years. She also said she has done extensive therapy and worked with the same therapist for close to 15 years. Those details are part of her personal account; they do not establish a current alcohol-related illness or a particular treatment outcome.
How she describes her body image now
Burke wrote in 2026 that she loved what she saw in the mirror at the time she was writing, while leaving room for that feeling to change: “Today, when I look in the mirror, I love what I see. Tomorrow, we’ll see. But today I do.” The statement describes a moment in her experience; it should not be read as proof that body dysmorphia has been cured.
