No: the coronial investigation into Jock Zonfrillo’s death is no longer ongoing. 7NEWS reported on 6 February 2025 that it had concluded on 27 August 2024, but the coroner’s finding was not published. The medical cause of death has therefore not been established in the cited public reporting.
What police said when Zonfrillo was found
On 1 May 2023, ABC reported that Victoria Police attended an address in Carlton for a welfare check and found a 46-year-old man. Police said there were no suspicious circumstances, but did not disclose a cause of death. The immediate police statement did not establish the medical cause. ABC News, 1 May 2023.
When the coronial investigation ended
In a report published on 6 February 2025, 7NEWS said the Coroners Court investigation was completed on 27 August 2024. A court spokesperson was quoted as saying: “At the close of the investigation, the coroner determined that the finding would not be published.” The report did not make the finding public. 7NEWS, 6 February 2025.
What is known about the cause of death
The medical cause remains undisclosed in the cited public sources. Because the coroner’s finding was not published, the public cannot use it to establish the cause. Reports attributing a cause to unnamed sources should not be treated as a confirmed medical finding.

Why the family has kept the cause private
In a later 7NEWS interview, Lauren Zonfrillo said she chose to keep the cause of death private after discussions with the coroner, citing her family’s privacy and safety. That is her explanation for the family’s decision; it is not a published explanation from the Coroners Court for withholding the finding. 7NEWS interview.
What a Victorian coroner investigates
The Coroners Court of Victoria says coronial investigations seek to establish a person’s identity, cause of death and how the death occurred where possible. An inquest is not held in every investigation. The court says it investigates about 6,500 deaths and fires each year, and inquests are held in typically less than five per cent of investigations; these are general figures, not details about Zonfrillo’s case.
