Artists identified as publicly supporting Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva or the Workers’ Party (PT) during Brazil’s 2022 election included Anitta, Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Chico Buarque, and Gal Costa. A separate campaign event and an electoral ruling brought artists’ performances into focus, but the ruling targeted campaign advertising—not artists’ right to express political views. The available sources do not establish that these endorsements changed the election result.
Which artists were identified as supporting Lula?
A 2023 publication by INCT.DD at Universidade Federal Fluminense lists Anitta, Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Chico Buarque, and Gal Costa among artists who declared support for Lula or PT during the 2022 election. The available passage supports the group-level identification; it does not provide a person-by-person chronology or enough detail to assign each artist a specific date, platform, quotation, or campaign appearance. That distinction matters: a public declaration of support is not the same thing as appearing at a campaign event, performing at one, or having a song used in campaign advertising. The published artist list does not establish that all five attended the September event described below.
What happened at the September 26 campaign event?
Artists appeared in person and by video at a campaign event at Anhembi in São Paulo on September 26, 2022, according to Brazil’s Superior Electoral Court (TSE). The court later affirmed a partial injunction barring Lula’s coalition and campaign from displaying campaign-advertising jingles sung by artists. The order did not require all event or social-media material to be removed: other portions could remain available if the prohibited jingle segments were omitted. What did the electoral ruling prohibit—and what did it leave lawful?
The ruling concerned the use of artist-sung jingles in campaign advertising. It did not amount to a general ban on artists voicing political opinions or supporting candidates. The TSE account distinguishes restrictions on campaign “showmícios” from artists’ freedom to state political positions during their own shows or performances, drawing on a point attributed to a Supreme Federal Court (STF) ruling.
In English, the principle is that members of the artistic community may lend their public image to a candidacy or another cause. The distinction is between political expression and the regulated use of a performance or jingle as campaign advertising.

Did celebrity support affect the election result?
The TSE’s final tally gave Lula 60,345,999 votes, or 50.9% of valid votes, and Jair Bolsonaro 58,206,354 votes, or 49.1%. After approving the final second-round report, the court proclaimed Lula and Geraldo Alckmin elected. The result was close, but the sources cited here do not measure whether celebrity endorsements affected voting behavior or estimate how many votes they may have shifted. The Carter Center’s 2023 election-mission report discusses disinformation and campaign narratives involving Lula, Bolsonaro, and the TSE; it provides broader election context, not evidence of an endorsement effect.
