On January 22, 2024, he spoke about marriage on TODAY with Hoda & Jenna. In a separate appearance that day on The Jennifer Hudson Show, he and Hudson acknowledged that they were dating.
What did Common mean by “marrying type”?
During a January 22, 2024 appearance on TODAY with Hoda & Jenna, Common said personal growth had helped him see himself as someone who could marry. Us Weekly quoted him saying, “I feel like I have grown and the work that I’ve done on myself has allowed me to see that I am a marrying type.”
He described marriage as a possibility for the future, not a decision already made: “I’m capable and I have the capacity, and if at some point in my life I may want to do that, I would know when the right time is.” Us Weekly also reported that he spoke about looking for divine discernment. The appearance included discussion of his book, And Then We Rise: A Guide to Loving and Taking Care of Self.
Did Common say he wants to marry Jennifer Hudson?
No. The reported remarks were about marriage in general and were conditional: Common said he might want to marry at some point and would know when the time was right. The coverage does not report him announcing a marriage plan with Hudson, an engagement, or a wedding date.

Did Common and Jennifer Hudson confirm they were dating?
Yes. In a separate January 22, 2024 appearance on The Jennifer Hudson Show, Common said he was in a relationship with someone whose attributes pointed to Hudson. Hudson said she was dating him and was very happy. Entertainment Tonight reported the exchange and Common’s explanation that he is private: “I’m a person that is very private, I know what things are sacred. So any relationships I have are not for public consumption.” That is a reported quotation from the appearance.
What was reported about their relationship timeline?
Us Weekly reported that Common and Hudson met on the set of Breathe in 2022 and were romantically linked after being seen together in Las Vegas in December 2023. This is the chronology reported by that outlet; it does not change the distinction between their dating acknowledgment and Common’s separate, general comments about marriage.
