Jimmy Rees’s Nedlands skit was comedy, not a report about Fiona Argyle. In his “Not so emergency department” series, Rees played a caller whose minor worries included being “from Nedlands and I’m depressed”; another character asked, “Are you running for mayor or getting sued?” The joke nodded to a real council upheaval: resignations left Nedlands City Council without a quorum, after which the state government moved to dissolve it.
What happens in Jimmy Rees’s Nedlands skit?
PerthNow reported on 14 July 2025 that Rees’s latest Perth instalment of his “Not so emergency department” series had been uploaded the previous Sunday. The format places characters with relatively minor concerns in an emergency-department setting. In the Nedlands segment, one character says, “Darling I’m from Nedlands and I’m depressed,” prompting the line, “Are you running for mayor or getting sued?” PerthNow’s report attributes the dialogue to Rees’s performance.

The sequence ends with Rees answering a phone, hearing that the call is “from the former mayor of Nedlands,” and quickly hanging up. The punchline trades on the political drama around the mayor’s office; it does not establish that Argyle was sued or that the exchange reflects anything a real resident or councillor said.
Why did the skit refer to Nedlands’ mayor?
The joke landed during a genuine crisis at the City of Nedlands. On 7 July 2025, four councillors resigned within hours, leaving the council without a quorum. The ABC reported that Local Government Minister Hannah Beazley said she would dissolve the council and appoint a commissioner; it also reported that Argyle described the resignations as a good thing. ABC’s 7 July report covers the resignations and the immediate response.

Two days later, the ABC reported Beazley’s plan to replace the council with three commissioners. Argyle, then the mayor, disputed the move and said she was “not going anywhere.” That was her response before the remaining elected positions were formally declared vacant. ABC’s 9 July report describes the dispute and proposed change.

The sequence matters: councillors’ resignations caused the loss of quorum; the minister announced the dissolution process; then the remaining positions, including the mayor’s, were declared vacant. The City of Nedlands says the four remaining councillor positions became vacant effective 25 July 2025, after five councillors had resigned on 7 July. The City’s council election records give the official vacancy date.
Argyle is a former mayor, not the current mayor. The City’s official result for the extraordinary election held on 28 March 2026 says Leonie Buktenica Browner was elected mayor through 20 October 2029. The 2026 election result records the outcome. The City also lists council meetings through 23 September 2026, reflecting the elected council’s return to business. Its council meetings page provides those records.
How widely was the skit viewed?
PerthNow reported at the time that Rees had 1.8 million TikTok followers and that the skit had received more than 630,000 views across his platforms. Those are figures reported in July 2025, not current audience counts or independently verified totals. The report does not provide a named person’s assessment of the comedy itself.
