Chef’s Table: Legends marks Netflix’s tenth-anniversary framing of Chef’s Table with four portraits of Jamie Oliver, José Andrés, Thomas Keller, and Alice Waters. The season is less a set of cooking lessons than an invitation to consider what drives each chef—and how a life’s experiences shape the food they make.
What the tenth-anniversary season is
Netflix’s Media Center presents Chef’s Table: Legends as a celebration of the franchise’s tenth anniversary. Netflix lists the 2025 documentary season as four episodes and credits David Gelb as its creator. Netflix Tudum announced an April 28, 2025 premiere; the title page currently identifies the season by year rather than listing a date. | Episode | Netflix’s stated focus |
|---|---|
| Jamie Oliver | His path toward inspiring younger generations to cook healthily and joyfully. |
| José Andrés | His maximalist approach, influence on Spanish cuisine in the United States, and wider life’s work. |
| Thomas Keller | His legacy and influence. Netflix’s synopsis calls him the first American chef to win three Michelin stars and the only one to do so twice; that distinction is Netflix’s claim here. |
| Alice Waters | Her connection with Chez Panisse and the farm-to-table movement, including local and organic food. |

What makes Chef’s Table different?
The series builds its episodes around a chef’s motivations and personal history rather than primarily teaching a recipe or staging a competition. In a Netflix Tudum anniversary interview, creator and executive producer David Gelb described the aim this way: “It’s an inspiring chef telling their life story — and making it about more than just food. It’s not about how they cook, it’s about why.”
Gelb said the crew spends weeks with subjects to observe how their kitchens work and to understand the paths that led them there. He described looking for passion and following where it takes each chef, including the setbacks and changes of direction along the way. That is Gelb’s account of the series’ method, rather than a claim that every episode follows an identical formula. Netflix Tudum anniversary interview
Why do cooks cook?
The question gets a direct answer in the same interview. Thomas Keller recalls that his mentor, Roland Henin, asked him, “Do you know why cooks cook?” Keller says Henin answered: “We cook to nurture people.” It is a compact expression of the series’ larger interest: not only what appears on a plate, but the purpose a cook believes the work serves. A related book from José Andrés
For readers who want to continue with one of the season’s subjects off-screen, José Andrés Media describes Change the Recipe: Because You Can’t Build a Better World Without Breaking Some Eggs as a 2025 book of stories and inspiration from his life—not a cookbook. The same publisher identifies Zaytinya, published with Ecco in 2024, as a cookbook featuring recipes from Andrés’ Eastern Mediterranean restaurant. José Andrés Media: books
What the anniversary does—and does not—establish
Netflix’s materials connect Legends with the franchise’s tenth anniversary, identify its four subjects, and explain the show’s stated storytelling approach through Gelb’s interview. They do not, by themselves, quantify the series’ audience or cultural influence. The anniversary is a useful moment to reflect on the format, but claims about its broader impact should be attributed rather than treated as independently measured fact.
