Its campus comedy has lively ensemble energy; the later shift into family melodrama and an inspirational message about failure is less even. The result is warm and often funny, but only partially persuasive as an emotional drama.
What is Chhichhore about?
Nitesh Tiwari’s 2019 Hindi comedy-drama links college life with adulthood through a group of old friends brought together again. The official synopsis frames the story around their hostel and college experiences, friendships and reunion, moving between past and present. That structure gives the film two registers: the unruly camaraderie of student life and the more serious family drama of the present-day frame.
Released theatrically on 6 September 2019, the film runs 2 hours 26 minutes and is listed as comedy, romance and drama. Rotten Tomatoes’ film listing identifies Hindi as its original language.
Where the campus comedy works
The film’s strongest asset is the group dynamic. Its characters are defined by comic personalities and nicknames as much as by plot function, giving their conversations and rivalries a loose, lived-in feel. The jokes help make the friends’ bond legible: they can needle one another without the film having to explain why they keep showing up for each other.

That ensemble quality is central to the film’s appeal. The official cast includes Sushant Singh Rajput as Anirudh “Annii” Pathak, Shraddha Kapoor as Maya Sharma Pathak, Varun Sharma as Gurmeet “Sexa” Singh Dhillon, Naveen Polishetty as Himanshu “Acid” Deshmukh, Tushar Pandey as Sundar “Mummy” Srivastava, Tahir Raj Bhasin as Derek D’Souza, Saharsh Kumar Shukla as Sahil “Bevda” Awasthi and Prateik Babbar as Raghuvir “Raggie” Chalkar. Their characters give the campus passages their variety: the humor comes not just from gags, but from the way the friends’ differences create friction and affection.
Contemporary critics noticed that comic momentum. Film Companion’s Anupama Chopra wrote on 6 September 2019 that “The one-liners keep coming so that even when the film tests your patience – and let me assure you that it does – you keep rooting for these people to succeed.” LiveMint’s Udita Jhunjhunwala, also writing on 6 September, found the humor “so organic that one can forgive the film’s contrivances.” Those are individual critical responses, but they capture the trade-off: the group can keep the film engaging even when its construction feels conspicuous.
Why the emotional turn is less convincing
Chhichhore does not remain a campus comedy. Its present-day family story pushes the film toward parental anxiety, sentiment and an argument about how to face failure. That shift gives the friendship a serious purpose, but it also changes the rhythm. The college sections have room for character-based humor; the dramatic frame has to carry a much heavier emotional burden and deliver the film’s inspirational point.

The transition can feel engineered rather than fully earned. Rachel Saltz of The New York Times called the film a work that “Strains to be an inspirational comedy tear-jerker (Bollywood-wise, a reasonable genre) but mostly seems programmatic and timid” in her 8 September 2019 review. Scroll.in’s Nandini Ramnath described its movement from rambunctious campus comedy into sentimental family drama, back toward games and then tear-jerking territory, concluding that it runs out of breath with only some ambitions realised. The contrast between those responses and the praise for its humor points to the central limitation: warmth for the friends does not automatically make every emotional pivot convincing.

The film’s case for resilience is clearest when it grows out of the friends’ history and the way they support one another. It is less affecting when the drama leans on sentiment to make its point. Viewers looking for a consistent comedy may find the later stretches slow; viewers prepared for an earnest, sometimes uneven blend of genres may find the emotional intent worthwhile.

Yes, if you enjoy ensemble comedies about old friends and are willing to follow them into a more sentimental family drama. Its best scenes draw humor from character and companionship, rather than relying only on punchlines. The emotional material is more uneven, so the film’s appeal depends on how much patience you have for its tonal changes and overtly inspirational aims.

How critics and audiences rated it
Rotten Tomatoes’ page, checked on 8 October 2026, showed a 58% Tomatometer from 12 reviews and a 91% Popcornmeter from more than 250 verified ratings. These are changing platform snapshots, not a universal verdict or a stable historical measure. The gap suggests a difference between the critics represented on the page and the verified audience ratings counted there; it does not establish what all viewers think.
Rotten Tomatoes listed Apple TV as a rent-or-buy option when checked. That listing does not confirm availability or current terms in every country.
