“Butt cleavage” is a loose name for several fashion choices that expose or emphasize the upper buttocks: a low back, a rear cut-out, very low-rise bottoms, or underwear deliberately worn where it can be seen. It is a recurring fashion idea—not one uniform look—and the runway, red carpet and street-style versions are not interchangeable.
What the trend describes
The phrase overlaps with “bumster,” “the exposed thong trend” and “underwear as outerwear,” but each points to a different styling choice. A bumster sits low enough to reveal the top of the buttocks; a cut-out or backless garment exposes skin through its construction; underwear-as-outerwear makes the underwear itself part of the visible outfit. Some looks combine these elements, while others use only one.
To tell them apart, look at four things: how much skin is exposed, which garment detail creates the effect, whether underwear is visible by design, and whether the setting is a runway, red carpet or everyday outfit.
From McQueen’s bumster to a runway revival
Vogue traces the bumster to Alexander McQueen’s 1993 “Taxi Driver” collection. The idea returned to runways in Autumn/Winter 2024, with variations at shows by Dilara Findikoglu, Ludovic de Saint Sernin, Vaquera, Masha Popova, and Chet Lo. The designs differed in cut and exposure; the shared reference was a low-slung silhouette that drew attention to the lower back. Vogue’s 2024 runway report also quoted vintage specialist Sarah Faisal describing the mood as “a return to deliberate undressing.”

Vogue cited a separate signal of interest: fashion commentator Madé Lapuerta reported that low-rise-pants popularity had risen 16.6 per cent “over the past month,” based on sentiment analysis of hundreds of online press articles and posts. That is a measure of coverage sentiment, not clothing sales or a population-wide survey; Vogue noted that Lapuerta found little comparable data for the term “bumster.”
How celebrities wore it in 2024
Celebrity coverage helped make “butt cleavage” a visible label for the look in 2024, but the examples used different constructions. Bustle’s May 15 roundup covered Zendaya, Katy Perry, Chlöe Bailey and Kendall Jenner. Bustle’s examples show why it is misleading to treat every outfit as the same kind of exposure.

Red-carpet and runway examples in 2026
Teyana Taylor’s jeweled detail
At the Golden Globes on January 11, 2026, Teyana Taylor wore a custom Schiaparelli Haute Couture gown designed by Daniel Roseberry. A rear cut-out revealed a silver-rhinestone “bijou thong.” Taylor told E! News, “The crack is covered in diamonds,” as reported by Marie Claire. This was a couture red-carpet construction, not simply a standard dress paired with ordinary visible underwear.
New York Fashion Week’s exposed-rear silhouettes
At New York Fashion Week Spring 2027, GQ described low-slung dresses, sagging low-rise bottoms and jeans cut away at the sacrum. Designer Emily Dawn Long told GQ, “Butt cracks were the basis for the collection itself.” GQ’s September 2026 report framed the look as a runway statement, not proof that it had become everyday or mass-market dress.

A July 2026 Who What Wear UK trend report connected the broader underwear-as-outerwear revival with low-slung jeans, visible thongs and backless dresses. Together, these reports show continued fashion coverage of related looks, rather than one fixed silhouette.
How to compare the different versions

Borrowing the look without copying couture
The simplest way to borrow one element is to choose the level of exposure and setting first. A fashion thong or low-rise thong is the most direct product category for deliberately visible underwear; low-rise jeans and backless or cut-out dresses are adjacent options. These pieces can echo a styling idea, but they do not reproduce a bespoke couture gown or its construction.

For a restrained version, a low back or small cut-out can suggest the silhouette without making underwear the focal point. For an intentional exposed-thong look, treat the underwear as part of the outfit rather than an accidental reveal: check how it sits with the garment when standing, sitting and moving, and consider the event’s dress expectations. Vogue quoted designer Masha Popova on controlling exposure through the choice of undergarment, while noting that the full reception of the trend would become clearer over time.
