Called Castlevania Chronicles II: Simon’s Quest, it was reported as a free Windows game with updated visuals and several gameplay changes. Its present-day download availability has not been confirmed.
Which Simon’s Quest remake does the headline mean?
It refers to Castlevania Chronicles II: Simon’s Quest, a fan-made project attributed to WarMachine Studios. HotHardware reported on January 25, 2023 that the game was released and free to download. Nothing in that report identifies it as an official Konami remake. Read HotHardware’s report.
The full title matters because other fan projects use similar names. Castlevania Chronicles II: Simon’s Quest is the name associated with the 2023 report; it should not be used as a catch-all for every fan remake of the NES game.
What changes did the 2023 project report?
HotHardware described improved visuals and gameplay adjustments to the original’s exploration and dungeon structure. Reported changes included replacing hearts with gold as the currency used for purchases and adding a slide move. The project also offered the original soundtrack as a separate download, according to the article.

The remake retains the broad premise of exploring an open-ended world, following NPC hints and entering mansion-like dungeons. GOG Dreamlist describes the 2023 fan remake as a Windows single-player game. See its GOG Dreamlist listing.
Is it still possible to download?
The 2023 coverage described the game as free, but that is a historical report, not confirmation that its files or download links remain available today. HotHardware initially noted that Google Drive downloads were constrained by a daily quota. In a January 27, 2023 update, the outlet said the team had also uploaded the game to Archive.org, with direct and torrent download options. Those dated details do not establish that either host currently serves the files.

How it relates to the original game
Castlevania II: Simon’s Quest first appeared on NES and Famicom, according to HotHardware’s account. Later releases on Windows, Nintendo virtual consoles, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One are described there as ports or emulations, not remakes. That distinction separates official ways to play the original from the fan-made visual and gameplay rework.
