Dangerous Games: Roblox and the Metaverse Exposed is a 2025 Canadian documentary about grooming, harassment, extremist recruitment and exploitation in immersive online spaces. It presents participants’ experiences, not a measure of how common such incidents are across Roblox. For families considering the film, the producer recommends the full version for ages 16 and up and an edited educational version for ages 13 and up.
What is Dangerous Games: Roblox and the Metaverse Exposed?
Directed by Ann Shin, the documentary was produced by Fathom Film Group with TVO. Fathom Film says Erica Leendertse created the film and that D. Cole and Leendertse wrote it. Filming began in 2023 and wrapped in 2024. Global News published an interview with Shin and online-safety advocate Alex Farrugia on May 27, 2025: Global News interview.
The film follows Alex, Janae and Katie. According to the production company, Katie recounts being groomed by a prominent Roblox developer when she was a young teen. The documentary also examines harassment, extremist recruitment and exploitation in immersive online spaces. These are the film’s subject matter and participant accounts; the film’s framing does not establish how prevalent the alleged conduct is across Roblox.
What does the film say about Roblox and other platforms?
Fathom Film says Roblox took part in an initial interview with vice president Tami Bhaumik and later provided a written statement, but declined further interviews. The production team says Discord provided a statement and Minecraft did not respond by the publication deadline. These details describe the producer’s account of its reporting and outreach, not an independent finding about the platforms.

The film’s allegations and participant stories should be understood in that context. The sources cited here do not verify each allegation independently, and no named statistic quantifying predator prevalence on Roblox was established. Fathom Film says exact statistics are difficult to confirm, so a prevalence figure should not be inferred from the documentary.
Is the documentary appropriate for children?
Fathom Film recommends the full-length documentary for viewers aged 16 and older and describes an edited educational version for ages 13 and older. Its content warning includes online grooming, sexual harassment, exploitation, and a participant’s experience with suicidal ideation and an attempted suicide. Apple’s Canadian catalog lists the film as 14+; that is a separate catalog rating, not the producer’s age guidance. Apple lists a 1-hour-18-minute version, while EPF Media catalogs a 79-minute English NTSC edition, so runtime depends on the listing and version.

What can parents do to support safer Roblox use?
Roblox’s Safety FAQ describes its own safeguards: chat requires an age check, is restricted by age group and trusted-friend settings, and is filtered for policy-violating content. The company cautions that safeguards are not perfect, saying, “We also acknowledge that no system is perfect, so we encourage parents to talk to their children about online safety.” These are Roblox’s descriptions of its controls and advice, not an independent assessment of their effectiveness. Roblox’s parent resource recommends linking a parent account and using controls for screen time and content. It also advises talking with children about personal information and requests to move conversations off-platform, and using block or report tools for troubling behavior: Roblox parent resource.
Fathom Film adds practical steps for families: monitor friend lists and chat histories, keep devices in shared spaces where possible, and have regular, nonjudgmental conversations. These steps complement platform controls; they do not guarantee that a child will never encounter harmful behavior.
