The Booker Prize Foundation confirms that its Kiran Desai extract comes from the opening chapter, but its text differs from Scroll’s version—including the year given for Mina Foi’s birthday. The distinction matters: the Desai passage below is identified as the Booker’s official opening-chapter extract; the other five are brief fragments from Scroll’s feature, not independently verified first lines.
The six shortlisted novels
The Booker Prize Foundation’s official shortlist names these six novels and authors. Its extracts roundup also includes sample passages from each book.
| Novel | Author | Opening fragment in Scroll’s feature | Entry point |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flashlight | Susan Choi | “Louisa and her father…” | A family relationship |
| The Loneliness of Sonia and Sunny | Kiran Desai | “The sun was submerged…” | A wintry dawn and family members emerging onto a veranda |
| Audition | Katie Kitamura | “It seemed an unlikely…” | A meeting or encounter |
| The Rest of Our Lives | Ben Markovits | “When our son was…” | A family memory |
| The Land in Winter | Andrew Miller | “He was lying on…” | A character’s immediate surroundings |
| Flesh | David Szalay | “When he’s fifteen…” | A character’s youth |
The fragments are deliberately short; they identify the passages without reproducing extended copyrighted text. Scroll calls its selections “opening lines.” The Booker’s shortlist page provides extracts, but in the material cited here only Desai’s is explicitly identified by the Foundation as coming from the novel’s opening chapter.
What is established about Desai’s opening
The Booker Prize Foundation’s Kiran Desai extract identifies its passage as coming from the opening chapter. It begins at a wintry dawn, with Ba, Dadaji, and Mina Foi emerging onto a veranda. In the Booker text, Mina Foi’s fifty-fifth birthday is December 1, 1996.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Scroll’s September 25 feature gives a different version of the passage and dates the birthday to 1998. The wording differs too. These accounts should not be merged: the Booker page is the primary source for what the Foundation presents as the opening-chapter extract, while Scroll is the source for its own reported opening-lines selection. The discrepancy does not, by itself, establish which wording appears in every edition of the novel.
How the openings approach their stories
The brief fragments suggest several different ways into a novel: through a family bond in Choi, a family scene in Desai, an unlikely encounter in Kitamura, a recollection in Markovits, a character’s immediate physical setting in Miller, and a reference to a fifteen-year-old in Szalay. These are observations about the reported fragments, not claims that they summarize each book’s full narrative structure.

The Booker Foundation’s shortlist page frames the novels more broadly as works about people trying to live with, love, understand, tolerate, or escape one another. Chair of the 2025 judges Roddy Doyle said: “Their authors are in total command of their own store of English, their own rhythm, their own expertise; they have each crafted a novel that no one else could have written.”

The Booker Prize Foundation’s judges’ page names Flesh by David Szalay as the 2025 prize winner. The judges describe The Loneliness of Sonia and Sunny in terms of love, family, class, race, nationhood, and loneliness; their comments on Flashlight emphasize its family scale, migration, and geopolitics.
