Season 12, gives Kevin Atwater the lead as an armed-robbery investigation meets a question he can’t solve for someone else: how much of himself can he keep giving to work and the people around him? Its strongest character angle is the possibility of seeing Atwater as more than the dependable officer who shows up for everyone else.
What happens in “Off Switch”

The forensic psychologist is part of the investigation’s setup and a route into the episode’s treatment of mental health and victims. The premise gives the character work a professional context rather than separating it from the police case. The available episode descriptions and reviews do not support treating the story as a general account of forensic psychology or making claims about diagnoses beyond what the episode itself presents.
Why Atwater’s focus matters
Worldwide Entertainment News reads “Off Switch” as a continuation of Atwater’s longer caretaker arc: he has carried responsibilities for others, including within his family, and the critic sees the episode as engaging with the fatigue that can follow. That interpretation makes the hour’s central tension more specific than a routine work-life-balance plot. Atwater’s reliability is a strength, but it can also leave little room for his own needs.

#1 Best Overall
That is a critic’s reading, not evidence of a consensus about the episode. It is also what makes the character focus potentially rewarding: the story can acknowledge Atwater’s care for other people while asking what that care costs him. Worldwide Entertainment News also praises LaRoyce Hawkins’s performance, which helps carry this personal material without reducing Atwater to a single problem to be solved.
How the case and character story work together
The episode’s effectiveness depends on whether the armed-robbery investigation gives Atwater’s personal conflict room to develop, rather than functioning as a brief frame around it. The psychologist’s presence offers a natural connection between the case and questions of people’s inner lives. The balance to watch is whether that role feels integrated into the investigation and whether the case retains momentum while Atwater’s story takes center stage.
Similarly, the personal thread works best when it feels earned by the character’s history rather than explained anew. The caretaker reading from Worldwide Entertainment News supplies continuity for viewers who have followed Atwater’s family responsibilities. Viewers coming to this episode alone can still follow its stated struggle to find balance, though some of the longer arc’s weight depends on that prior context.

Val and Atwater’s life beyond work
CBR’s review listing identifies the episode as Atwater-centered and notes the introduction of Val as a possible love interest. Worldwide Entertainment News also treats this connection as a developing possibility. It is a small but useful counterpoint to the work-and-duty storyline: Atwater’s personal life may be opening outward, rather than being defined only by what he does for other people.
Val’s introduction is a beginning, not a settled relationship outcome. Its appeal therefore rests on whether the possibility feels engaging in this episode on its own, not on assuming where it leads.
