Casablanca Review: Why the 1942 Classic Still Works

A guarded nightclub owner, an old love and a resistance leader make Casablanca’s wartime romance a story about what private happiness can ask us to sacrifice.

Yes—Casablanca is still worth watching for its sharp ensemble performances, finely staged drama and romance tested by wartime moral stakes. Rick Blaine’s nightclub draws refugees, resistance leader Victor Laszlo and Nazi power into the same room; when Rick’s former love Ilsa returns with Laszlo, Rick must decide whether to protect a private happiness or help a cause larger than himself.

What Casablanca is about

Directed by Michael Curtiz and released by Warner Bros. in 1942, Casablanca stars Humphrey Bogart as Rick, Ingrid Bergman as Ilsa and Paul Henreid as Laszlo. Rick runs a nightclub in wartime Casablanca, a waystation for people hoping to escape Europe. His carefully maintained neutrality becomes harder to sustain when Ilsa arrives with Laszlo, a resistance leader whose work puts him in danger.

The plot’s pressure comes from two kinds of escape. Rick and Ilsa face the unfinished business of their romance, while Laszlo and the refugees face the political and physical danger of remaining in reach of Nazi power. The nightclub makes those conflicts collide: each new arrival can shift the balance of safety, loyalty and control.

Why the performances and ensemble matter

Rick’s guardedness gives the story somewhere to go

Bogart plays Rick as a man who has turned detachment into a public pose. His dry exchanges and apparent self-interest are not just a collection of memorable lines; they establish how much he wants to avoid being drawn into other people’s causes. The return of Ilsa makes that stance personal, and Laszlo’s presence makes it political. Rick’s eventual choice carries weight because the film has shown what it costs him to make one.

Ilsa, Laszlo and Renault complicate the choice

Bergman gives Ilsa a difficult balance to hold: she has a history with Rick, but she is also committed to Laszlo and to the work he represents. Henreid makes Laszlo more than a plot device to be rescued; his conviction gives Rick’s decision a real alternative to romantic reunion. Claude Rains’s Captain Renault adds another kind of tension, moving between official authority, opportunism and personal judgment.

The supporting cast makes the club feel like a social crossroads rather than a stage reserved for the three leads. That ensemble is one reason the story can shift from flirtation to threat without losing its human scale. The British Film Institute calls the screenplay “sparkling” and praises the supporting performances; those are critical judgments, but they capture the film’s particular pleasure in character entrances, exchanges and reactions.

Romance, politics and the choice at the center

Casablanca does not ask its romantic conflict to stand apart from the war. Rick and Ilsa’s reunion matters because it is entangled with Laszlo’s danger and the refugees’ need to get out. A private decision has public consequences. That arrangement gives the romance an ethical dimension without turning the characters into mere symbols: Rick’s pain is genuine, and so is the obligation that finally outweighs it.

The film’s achievement is not that it offers a simple lesson about sacrifice. It makes the alternative Rick wants emotionally legible, then shows why choosing it would mean ignoring the people and stakes around him. His change is consequential precisely because he has spent so much of the story trying not to choose.

How the studio storytelling creates momentum

The nightclub is an efficient dramatic machine. It brings together people with conflicting goals, lets news and danger arrive through conversation, and gives the audience a stable place from which to watch the situation tighten. Character entrances matter because the next person through the door may bring a new threat, a claim on Rick, or a reminder of the world outside the club.

The screenplay grew from Murray Bennett and Joan Alison’s unproduced play Everybody Comes to Rick’s. AFI records screenplay contributions from Julius and Philip Epstein, Howard Koch and Casey Robinson, as well as disputes during development. The familiar ending was not simply invented at the last minute: AFI notes that the play and early scripts already had Ilsa leave with Laszlo.

Curtiz’s direction and the polished studio construction keep the interlocking plots clear while preserving a sense of pressure. The film is elegant, but that elegance does not drain the story of urgency. Its controlled setting, precise exchanges and overlapping character aims allow romance, suspense and political conflict to advance together.

Wartime setting, not documentary record

The film’s Casablanca is a dramatic setting, not a documentary account of the city or refugee life. The BFI notes that the setting was created on the Warner Bros. lot. Its topical force came from a real wartime moment, but the film’s characters and events are arranged for a studio melodrama rather than offered as a literal record.

That context was unusually immediate at release. AFI records a New York opening on November 26, 1942, followed by a national U.S. release on January 23, 1943; the opening was moved forward after Allied forces landed in North Africa and Casablanca became prominent in the news. The timing helps explain the film’s original resonance, but does not by itself explain why its character conflicts remain compelling.

Release history and recognition

At the 16th Academy Awards on March 2, 1944, Casablanca won Best Picture, Best Director for Curtiz and Best Screenplay. AFI also lists nominations for Bogart, Rains, cinematography, editing and musical score. AFI ranked the film second on its 1997 “100 Years…100 Movies” list and third on the 2007 tenth-anniversary list. These awards and rankings document institutional recognition, not a universal measure of quality.
