Carrie Bradshaw’s most memorable outfits are not just a parade of designer labels: they combine vintage finds, playful silhouettes and accessories that become signatures. Harper’s Bazaar’s 2025 feature selects 45 looks, from the opening-credits tutu to the Vivienne Westwood wedding gown, but “most iconic” is an editorial judgment—not a definitive ranking.

What makes Carrie Bradshaw’s style recognizable?

Carrie’s wardrobe moves between fitted minis, romantic dresses, voluminous skirts and deliberately eccentric combinations. Recurring details help tie those changes together: a gold nameplate necklace, a Fendi Baguette, floral prints, Manolo Blahnik heels, statement belts and full skirts. These are motifs, not a checklist that appears in every outfit. Vogue’s overview of Carrie’s style identifies these recurring elements.

The look was built for a character whose style changed with her circumstances. Costume designer Patricia Field said Carrie was not clearly communicated to her at the start and developed over time in collaboration with Sarah Jessica Parker. Field described fittings as a process of discussing the script and the actor’s needs and feelings, rather than simply dressing a paper doll. Field explained her approach in a 2018 British Vogue interview.

Molly Rogers, who began assisting Field on the original series and later became the main costumer for And Just Like That, recalled a mix of designer pieces and one-of-a-kind vintage, including consignment-shop finds. That blend helps explain why Carrie’s outfits can feel both aspirational and improvised.

The opening tutu: a found piece that became a signature

The opening-credits outfit pairs a blush-pink bodysuit with a short, tiered white tulle tutu. In her memoir excerpt published by Vogue, Field recalled finding the skirt in a five-dollar bin at a midtown fashion showroom. That five dollars is the price in Field’s anecdote—not a current retail price, auction value or estimate of what a screen-used tutu would cost today. Field’s account of finding the tutu appears in her memoir excerpt.

The combination captures the show’s approach: an inexpensive found skirt transformed into an instantly recognizable image through styling, performance and repetition. The value of the look lies in the character it communicates, not in the price of the garment.

Standout outfits across the series and films

Harper’s Bazaar’s feature, “The 45 Best Carrie Bradshaw Outfits of All Time,” published August 6, 2025, is a retrospective fashion selection. Its visible numbered headings include the tutu, an ab-baring crop top, a minidress, fringe, color blocking, pinstripes, florals, the farewell dress and the wedding gown. The accessible text exposes the first 20 headings, while later entries are image-led; the examples below are documented looks, not a claim to independently verify or rank all 45. See Harper’s Bazaar’s 45-look editorial feature.

Early series: the naked dress and its return

In season one’s “Secret Sex,” Carrie wears a sheer, body-skimming “naked dress” with a faux-fur coat on her first date with Big. The outfit returns in the original series finale, giving it a different resonance after the story has unfolded. The repeat is one reason the dress stands out: it is linked both to an early encounter and to the series’ closing chapter. British Vogue’s outfit retrospective connects the dress with both appearances.

Middle seasons: bold prints and tailored contrast

In season three, Carrie wears a newspaper-print John Galliano for Dior dress when she confronts Natasha. The pattern makes the outfit conspicuous, while the scene gives it a specific narrative setting rather than making it a generic example of “Carrie being fashionable.”

Season four’s pinstriped Vivienne Westwood skirt suit, worn in “Drunk at Vogue,” takes a more tailored route. A cameo brooch and Carrie necklace add decorative contrast to the sharp stripes. British Vogue identifies the designer and episode for both looks.

Season five and six: casual disorder, then a micro-mini

A season-five combination of a boho top with a visible bra, jorts, a silk scarf and mesh heels shows Carrie’s deliberately haphazard side. By season six, a Paco Rabanne micro-mini with a shredded handkerchief hem supplies a much more dramatic silhouette for dinner with Big. Together, the looks show how far her wardrobe can move between casual layering and high-impact evening dressing. British Vogue documents these season-specific examples.

The first film: Vivienne Westwood wedding gown

Carrie’s wedding gown in the first Sex and the City film has a corseted bodice and voluminous skirt, topped with a blue feather headpiece. It is a formal, sculptural departure from the more street-oriented looks that define much of the series, and Harper’s Bazaar includes it among its visible selections.

The second film: Dior shirt and lilac skirt

In the second film, a Galliano-era “J’Adore Dior” shirt is paired with a voluminous lilac skirt at the souk. Field separately named the pairing among her favorite Carrie moments. Its appeal comes from the contrast between a logo shirt and a sweeping skirt, rather than from matching pieces into a conventional formal outfit. British Vogue covers the film look; Field discussed her favorite looks in her interview.

And Just Like That: recognizable shapes, new combinations

The revival’s cited standouts include a coral Valentino gown, a Moncler puffer-and-ball-gown hybrid and a petal-pink Simone Rocha dress embellished with roses. These continue Carrie’s taste for memorable silhouettes, but they are not simply repetitions of the original-series wardrobe. British Vogue’s retrospective identifies these revival-era examples.

How to read the 45-outfit list

A list of “best” outfits is most useful as a map of Carrie’s changing style, not a scorecard. The selection spans different silhouettes, settings, eras and approaches to dressing:

  • Silhouette: compare fitted minis with full tulle skirts, tailored suits and ball-gown proportions.
  • Setting: distinguish street scenes and casual combinations from weddings, dinners and formal occasions.
  • How the clothes were found: the wardrobe includes named designers as well as vintage and found pieces; a recognizable label alone does not explain a look’s appeal.
  • Accessories: shoes, bags, belts, necklaces and headpieces can carry as much visual weight as the main garment.
  • Era: the original series, the films and the revival each provide a different context for Carrie’s wardrobe.

Harper’s Bazaar’s visible headings themselves signal this range, moving from the tutu and crop tops to patterned dresses, hoops, shorts, a white suit and the wedding gown. Because the feature’s later entries are image-led in the accessible text, it is better to treat that source as an editorial selection than to claim a complete, independently confirmed catalogue of all 45 looks.

Screen-worn original or modern recreation?

Designer names and recognizable silhouettes identify some of the documented screen looks, but they do not establish that an identical item is still available, what it costs now or whether a retail lookalike matches the original garment. If recreating Carrie’s style, treat a tulle skirt, nameplate necklace, embellished shoulder bag or statement heels as inspiration—not as the screen-used original. The recurring style motifs are described in Vogue’s overview.
