Carol Kaye said in June 2025 that she had permanently declined the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame honor. She objected that the recognition did not reflect the collaborative work of studio musicians in the 1960s, and she rejected the “Wrecking Crew” label. The Hall’s current records still list her as a 2025 inductee in the Musical Excellence category—a distinction between her stated refusal and the institution’s induction status.
Why Carol Kaye said she declined the honor
In an email to the Associated Press reported June 21, 2025, Kaye wrote, “I’ve declined the rrhof. Permanently.” She also told AP she had sent the Hall a letter saying the same. AP reported that her statement followed a now-deleted Facebook post in which she said she would not attend the awards show.
Kaye said she was turning down the honor because it did not reflect the work studio musicians did in the golden era of 1960s recording hits. AP quoted her description of the “Wrecking Crew” name as “a terrible insulting name,” and her words: “I was never a ‘wrecker’ at all.” These are Kaye’s stated reasons, not a finding that the Hall’s recognition failed to represent every studio musician. Bass Magazine reproduced a longer passage from the deleted post in which Kaye described her path from working jazz musician and recording guitarist to bass player and emphasized that the musicians “all enjoyed working with EACH OTHER.” The passage helps explain why she framed the issue around collaboration; it is available through the magazine’s account rather than a directly accessible post. Did the Rock Hall still induct Carol Kaye?
Yes, in the Hall’s institutional record. Its current inductee profile lists Kaye as a 2025 inductee in the Musical Excellence category. That listing and Kaye’s reported decision to decline are distinct facts; the Hall listing does not erase her stated position. Rock & Roll Hall of Fame: Carol Kaye.
Musical Excellence is a route separate from the regular nominee ballot. In its pre-ceremony coverage, AP described recipients in that category as full-fledged Hall of Famers. Why Kaye’s recognition matters to music history
The Hall describes Kaye as a bassist who shaped American pop and a bedrock figure in the Los Angeles studio scene of the 1960s and 1970s. Its profile notes work spanning rock, pop, R&B, film scores and television themes. Among the Hall’s examples are Sonny & Cher’s “The Beat Goes On,” the “Theme from Mission: Impossible,” Glen Campbell’s “Wichita Lineman” and Barbra Streisand’s “The Way We Were.”
AP also identifies Kaye’s bass work on Simon & Garfunkel’s “Homeward Bound,” the Beach Boys’ “Good Vibrations” and the Monkees’ “I’m a Believer.” The Hall says her work proved invaluable to over 10,000 recordings; that figure is the Hall’s attribution, not an independently audited count.
