Herk Harvey’s 1962 black-and-white film leaves its central mystery open long enough for uncertainty itself to become the source of dread.
What is Carnival of Souls about?
Directed and produced by Herk Harvey, written by John Clifford, and scored by Gene Moore, the 1962 American film runs 78 minutes in a 1.37:1 aspect ratio, according to Criterion’s catalog entry. Candace Hilligoss plays Mary Henry, who survives a drag-race accident, takes a job as a church organist in Salt Lake City, and begins encountering a strange figure. Her attention is also pulled toward a deserted pavilion beside the Great Salt Lake.
That outline is enough to make “ghost story” a natural description, but it does not settle what the apparition means or why Mary is drawn to the pavilion. The film’s suspense grows from the gap between what she experiences and what can be neatly explained. Rather than treating the mystery as a puzzle that must be solved immediately, the story lets unease gather around Mary’s everyday routines.
Why does the film feel so creepy?
Ordinary life becomes unfamiliar
Mary accepts a recognizable job and moves through social spaces, yet her encounters make those surroundings feel unstable. That contrast matters: the fear does not depend only on a distant haunted place. It follows a character who has survived a catastrophe and now seems out of step with the world around her. The result is psychological as well as supernatural; viewers are left uncertain whether to read the events as an external haunting, a private crisis, or something that resists either label.

The empty pavilion turns a landscape into a threat
Harvey made the feature independently of Centron Corporation, the Lawrence, Kansas company where he had worked on industrial and educational films. The production was shot primarily at an abandoned amusement park on the Great Salt Lake, as Criterion’s account of the film’s history explains. A place built for crowds and pleasure becomes unnerving when it is deserted: its public scale suggests activity that has vanished, leaving architecture without the life it was meant to contain. That reading is an interpretation of the setting, not a claim that the film explains every detail of its locations.
The organ score gives the unease a sound
Criterion highlights the film’s organ score alongside its striking use of locations. The instrument gives the film a distinct sonic identity, connecting the story to Mary’s work as a church organist while making sound itself part of the atmosphere. Against the visual emptiness of the abandoned park, the score helps the setting linger in memory rather than functioning as mere background.

How did a limited release become a cult afterlife?
Carnival of Souls did not begin as a widely seen hit. Criterion says it opened in drive-in theaters in 1962 as part of a double feature, reaching a limited audience. A New York theatrical revival followed in 1989; Criterion describes the film’s later cult following and says that revival helped establish it as an influential horror film. Its reputation, then, grew well beyond its first release. That history gives the film’s spare, independent production a second life: later viewers could encounter a work whose atmosphere and formal choices had outlasted its modest initial exposure.

Criterion’s catalog lists a Blu-ray edition featuring a restored 4K digital transfer and an uncompressed monaural soundtrack, as well as a two-disc DVD edition. The Blu-ray supplements include commentary with Harvey and Clifford, an interview with Dana Gould, a video essay by David Cairns, a reunion documentary, location material, Centron excerpts, deleted scenes, outtakes, and an essay by Kier-La Janisse. Criterion’s page also links to its Channel listing for the film. Streaming access and physical-edition availability can vary by territory and over time, so check the current catalog for your location.
