Captain America: Brave New World has a credible case for landing among the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s weaker entries: its conspiracy-thriller setup recalls familiar franchise territory, and critics criticized its routine, overstuffed storytelling. But “bottom-tier” is a judgment, not a settled fact. Audiences rated it more favorably than critics did, and the film’s reception is mixed rather than universally hostile.
What the film is—and what “bottom-tier” means
Marvel Studios’ Captain America: Brave New World is a 2025 film directed by Julius Onah. It opened in the United States on February 14, 2025, is rated PG-13, and runs 1 hour 58 minutes, according to Disney’s official film page. Anthony Mackie stars as Sam Wilson, who investigates a global plot after meeting newly elected President Thaddeus Ross, played by Harrison Ford.
The film also stars Danny Ramirez, Shira Haas, Carl Lumbly, Xosha Roquemore, Giancarlo Esposito, Liv Tyler, and Tim Blake Nelson. Disney credits Rob Edwards, Malcolm Spellman, Dalan Musso, Julius Onah, and Peter Glanz on the screenplay; its story credits list Rob Edwards, Malcolm Spellman, and Dalan Musson. Those spellings and distinctions follow the studio’s page.
Calling the movie “bottom-tier” is most defensible as a critical assessment of its originality, plotting, and ability to stand apart—not as a claim that all viewers disliked it or that a definitive numerical ranking has been established. The available reception snapshot supports a case for disappointment, but not a universal verdict.
#1 Best Overall
- As he takes on the mantle of Captain America, Sam Wilson soon finds himself in the middle of an international incident. In a race against time, Sam must unravel a nefarious global plot before the true mastermind has the entire world seeing red. Warning: Some flashing-lights scenes in this film may affect photosensitive viewers.
Why critics found it routine
Rotten Tomatoes’ critic consensus says Mackie capably takes up the Captain America mantle, while describing the film as routine and overstuffed with uninteresting Easter eggs. That criticism gets at the central weakness behind the “neither brave nor new” argument: the movie has a new lead, but its plot and franchise machinery may feel more familiar than distinctive.
The Associated Press’ Mark Kennedy was harsher, awarding the film one star out of four. Kennedy called it unfocused and criticized its story and editing, while acknowledging Onah’s action direction. That is Kennedy’s judgment, not an objective measure of the movie’s quality; it nevertheless illustrates how the film’s construction disappointed some reviewers.
Other contemporary reactions show the range. In a Rotten Tomatoes roundup of first reviews, Digital Spy’s Ian Sandwell called it “serviceable.” JoySauce.com’s Siddhant Adlakha argued, “It has nothing to say about the world, or about its characters, and it’s never even fun.” The contrast is useful: a film can be competent enough to pass the time yet still leave critics unconvinced that its story or character work adds up to much.

Is it really “neither brave nor new”?
A familiar political-conspiracy setup
The story’s grounded, conspiracy-thriller approach invites comparison with Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Rotten Tomatoes’ review roundup frames the film in that territory, recording both approval of the approach and criticism that it has little to say. A familiar mode is not automatically a flaw; the question is whether the movie develops it into a compelling story of its own.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The case against Brave New World is that the conspiracy and its franchise connections can crowd out a clear, standalone identity. Easter eggs and MCU context may reward viewers who recognize them, but recognition is not the same as narrative or thematic development. If the plot feels familiar and the references do not deepen Sam’s story, the new Captain America risks feeling like another franchise installment rather than a distinct chapter.
Sam Wilson’s burden and the film’s opportunity
Sam becoming Captain America offers a potentially distinctive dramatic question: what does the role mean for a hero whose path differs from Steve Rogers’? The official synopsis places Sam in an investigation involving a newly elected president, giving the story a political frame as well as a superhero one. Critics’ complaints about an unfocused story and a lack of things to say suggest that, for some, the film did not turn those ingredients into a sufficiently coherent or resonant character arc.

- Steve Rogers wields the shield in Captain America: The First Avenger, Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War. Then it?s Sam Wilson who unleashes his wings and takes up the mantle in Captain America: Brave New World. Join them as they fight evil global forces with this action-packed 4-movie set.
That is a critical interpretation, not proof that the film has no ideas or that every viewer will find Sam’s journey unpersuasive. Producer Nate Moore described it to The Walt Disney Company as “as much as it is a grounded tale about Sam Wilson grappling with being Captain America, it also has some of our most stunning visual effects and action sequences to date.” That is the producer’s promotional characterization; it conveys the intended balance, but should not be mistaken for independent critical testimony.
Why audience and critic reactions differ
As of October 8, 2026, Rotten Tomatoes listed a 46% score from 368 critic reviews and a 75% score from more than 10,000 verified audience ratings. These are dated snapshots that may change, and the two measures represent different groups and judgments. The gap means critics were notably less favorable than the audience ratings—not that viewers unanimously loved the film or that critics agreed on every flaw. Rotten Tomatoes’ audience summary characterized it as a passable superhero film with the action expected from Marvel.
That difference makes “Is the new Captain America movie any good?” a matter of what a viewer wants from it. Someone looking for a conventional Marvel action film may find it adequate or enjoyable; someone expecting a tightly plotted political thriller or a defining Sam Wilson story may be more disappointed. The critical case against it is stronger on routine construction and limited distinctiveness than on a claim that it has no entertainment value at all.
Rank #4
Does it belong near the bottom of Marvel’s films?
The film can reasonably be called a weak MCU entry if the ranking criteria are originality, plot clarity, character development, and how well it works without extensive franchise context. Its critical consensus and Kennedy’s AP review support that argument, while the stronger audience score complicates it. Action and visual effects are also part of the picture: Onah’s action direction received acknowledgment even in Kennedy’s negative review, and the audience summary points to expected Marvel action.
There is not enough comparable evidence here to place it at a precise spot among all Marvel films. No directly comparable scores for earlier Captain America films or the wider MCU are included, so a numeric franchise ranking would overstate what these figures establish. “Bottom-tier” works as a critical verdict when tied to stated criteria; it should not be presented as a measured or unanimous ranking.
Is Captain America: Brave New World worth watching?
If you want to see Sam Wilson’s next chapter, follow MCU continuity, or are content with a familiar superhero thriller, it may be worth a watch. If your main priorities are a fresh premise, a tightly controlled conspiracy plot, or a memorable standalone exploration of Sam as Captain America, the critical objections are directly relevant. The most accurate short answer is that it is divisive: more appealing to verified audiences than to critics in the dated Rotten Tomatoes snapshot, but not broadly acclaimed.

Disney’s official page promotes digital availability and a Blu-ray release. Rotten Tomatoes’ U.S. listing checked for this article showed Disney+ streaming and Fandango rental or purchase options. Streaming catalogs and transactional availability vary by region and change over time, so check the current listing before you watch. The film’s own Blu-ray is the relevant physical edition for collectors; no particular retailer, current price, or stock status is established here.
Box-office context is not a verdict on quality
An Associated Press report in 2025 gave the film’s worldwide gross as $415 million. Gross is not profit: that figure alone does not establish production and marketing costs, distributor returns, or whether the film was profitable. It also cannot settle whether the movie is artistically successful or where it belongs in a critical ranking.
