What a “butt crack piercing” is
The phrase describes the placement informally. VICE, citing Body Candy, calls the piercing a “valley piercing”: a surface piercing on the lower back, above or sometimes within the cleft of the buttocks. The reporting also mentions “sacral piercing” and “coccyx piercing” as alternate names. These labels are not established in the reporting as standardized classifications, nor as different procedures.
What a piercer said about the risks
Brian Keith Thompson, a celebrity tattooist and body piercer, told TMZ that gluteal microdermals can take a long time to heal and may scar badly; he also cited infection risk associated with the location. He said he would warn the general public against getting one. Thompson framed the choice this way: “Once you do something like that, you own it. So, all the problems that come in, you’ve got to own those too.” These are his comments in a media interview, not a medical consensus statement or individualized health advice.
