He did not announce a Netflix renewal, production order, or release date.
What is The Society?
The Society is Netflix’s sci-fi drama about teenagers who find themselves in a facsimile of their wealthy New England town, without their parents. Could The Society return for a second season?
There is a possibility, based on Keyser’s comments, but no confirmation. T3 reported on June 25, 2024, that Keyser was still talking with writers and director Marc Webb about ways to continue the series. He said: “I have consistent conversations with a bunch of the writers and Marc Webb about how we might bring this back in some way.” He also cautioned that he did not know whether circumstances would align, adding that they would “keep trying for a while.” Those remarks describe interest and ongoing conversations, not a Netflix commission. Why was the series cancelled?
Keyser described the cancellation as connected to the global crisis that affected production after the show’s first year. T3 reported his explanation, given in a May 2024 Variety interview: “This wasn’t a normal cancellation. This wasn’t about not having the audience or we didn’t believe in it anymore. There was a global crisis that changed all of our lives in the one year we were able to make it.” This is Keyser’s account of the cancellation; it is not evidence that Netflix has since reversed its decision. Will The Society ever finish its story?
A graphic novel was considered as another way to continue the story, but it did not appear after the publisher went into administration, according to T3. There is therefore no published graphic-novel continuation to pick up in place of a second season. T3
A Production List page labeled “The Society (Season 2)” is marked “Completed,” but its listed shoot date is March 2020. That historical listing does not establish that a new season was produced or that one is currently in production. Film & Television Industry Alliance / Production List
