Yes. In Scrabble, a newly placed tile on a Double Word Score square doubles the score of the entire word it forms. Cover two Double Word Score squares in the same play and the word is doubled twice, for four times its letter score before other applicable scoring adjustments. “Double words” can also mean making two words in one turn or replaying a word; those are separate questions.
How does a Double Word Score work?
A Double Word Score (DWS) square is a pink square on the board. Under the National Scrabble Association’s official tournament rules, a pink square—including the center square—doubles the score of an entire word when one of its letters is placed on it. That is why the opening play, which covers the center square, receives a word-score multiplier.
The key is that the tile must newly cover the premium square on the current turn. A tile already sitting on a DWS does not make that square active again when a later play uses the tile to form another word. On that later turn, the existing letter counts at its face value.
How do you calculate a word that uses a premium square?
- Add letter values and apply letter premiums. A newly covered letter-score square affects the value of the letter on it.
- Apply the word multiplier. If a newly placed tile covers a DWS, double the resulting score of the whole word.
- Apply each newly covered word premium. If one word covers two DWS squares in the same play, its score is doubled twice: two times two, or four times its letter score before any other applicable scoring adjustments.
The National Scrabble Association’s tournament rules specify that letter premiums are counted before word premiums. A word multiplier applies to the whole word, not just the letter placed on the pink square.

What if one play makes more than one word?
Score every word formed by the play separately, then add those scores for the turn total. The National Scrabble Association’s tournament rules say that shared letters count in each word, and that a premium applies at full value where relevant. A newly placed tile on a DWS can therefore affect each word it forms, while a premium square occupied before this turn does not reactivate.
Does “double words” mean something else?
Making two words in one turn
That is possible when a play creates more than one valid word. It is not a separate “double word” bonus: calculate each word under the scoring rules and sum them.

Playing the same word again later
The available authoritative material does not settle whether an identical word may be played again on a later turn across all editions and settings. Check the word list and rules for the specific game or tournament rather than treating a Double Word Score rule as an answer to that separate question.
“Double challenge”
This refers to a challenge procedure, not a score multiplier. Hasbro’s official web-game explainer describes a turn-challenge option, also called “double challenge,” under which an opponent who makes an unsuccessful challenge loses the next move. Hasbro support says that all words formed in a single play are challenged simultaneously. These procedures are specific to the relevant game or mode; they are not universal Scrabble scoring rules.

Which rules should you follow?
The scoring explanation above is based on the National Scrabble Association’s official tournament rules. The cited publication is identified as older, so anyone playing in a tournament should confirm the current rules adopted by that event. Casual games and digital versions may use different challenge procedures or settings. Hasbro’s web-game guidance describes automatic word validation as an option, alongside its turn-challenge mode; neither changes what a Double Word Score square means.
