Yes. Dwayne Johnson and Roman Reigns are commonly described as cousins and members of an extended wrestling family. The connection runs through Johnson’s grandfather, Peter Maivia, and the Anoa’i family, whose patriarch, Reverend Amituana’i Anoa’i, is described in WWE and USA Network accounts as Maivia’s blood brother. That is a family kinship connection—not proof that the two share a biological ancestor or a specific cousin degree.
How are Dwayne Johnson and Roman Reigns connected?
WWE’s family accounts trace Johnson’s side through his mother, Ata Maivia, Peter Maivia’s daughter. Ata married wrestler Rocky Johnson, and Dwayne was their son. WWE describes Peter Maivia as a blood brother of the Anoa’i wrestling dynasty; Rocky Johnson became part of that family through his marriage to Ata. WWE’s profile of High Chief Peter Maivia and its profile of Rocky Johnson outline those links.
On Reigns’s side, he belongs to the Anoa’i family. WWE’s profile of the Wild Samoans identifies Sika as Reigns’s father. WWE’s Wild Samoans profile provides that link. USA Network’s account of the family legacy also connects Peter Maivia and Reverend Amituana’i Anoa’i as blood brothers and traces Johnson’s line through Ata and Rocky. USA Network’s family-tree explainer describes the broader connection.
Why are they called cousins?
“Cousins” is the common family description used for Johnson and Reigns in wrestling coverage. ESPN uses that framing in its account of the family’s wrestling legacy: ESPN’s WrestleMania 39 feature.

The wording reflects the extended-family connection through Peter Maivia and the Anoa’i family. The sources cited here do not establish a shared biological ancestor between Johnson and Reigns, or specify a conventional genealogical cousin degree. “Blood brother” in those accounts explains the family bond, but does not by itself establish biological descent.
