Avengers: Doomsday is connected directly to the ending of Avengers: Endgame: co-director Anthony Russo says the new story picks up where Steve Rogers’ story with Peggy Carter left off. Newly reported Endgame: Encore footage also shows Doctor Doom collecting Bruce Banner, played by Mark Ruffalo—whose name was missing from an earlier Doomsday cast announcement. That confirms Ruffalo’s involvement in footage associated with the film, but not the full cast or Banner’s role in the plot.
What is the Endgame connection to Doomsday?
It is the choice Steve Rogers makes at the end of Endgame to stay in the past and share a life with Peggy Carter. Anthony Russo, who co-directed both films, described that ending as the point from which Doomsday’s story takes shape. In a September 25, 2026 interview reported by ComicBook.com, Russo said: “There’s certainly a pivotal moment in that film at the end where the moment has a different meaning…Steve Rogers’ story ended with Peggy Carter, and in that moment, that’s where Doomsday is born.”
In a September 29, 2026 report about the Endgame: Encore footage, Disney quoted Russo saying the later film “begged of us: ‘You really need to pick the story up from where you left it in Endgame.’” The remarks establish a deliberate story link to Endgame’s ending. They do not explain the events between Steve’s decision and Doomsday, or establish that Steve’s choice alone causes the crisis.
Is Mark Ruffalo in Avengers: Doomsday?
Disney’s account of the Encore footage says Doctor Doom collects Bruce Banner, the Hulk alter ego played by Mark Ruffalo. That is evidence of Ruffalo’s involvement in footage associated with Doomsday, and it explains why the earlier cast announcement should not be treated as a complete roster. The footage does not reveal why Doom takes Banner or how much of the film he appears in.

Why was Hulk missing from the first cast announcement?
Marvel’s March 26, 2025 D23 announcement named 27 cast members when it reported that production had begun. Ruffalo was not among those names. That list was an announcement of the cast at that point, not confirmation that no other performers would appear. Disney’s 2026 report quotes Russo clarifying: “We have absolutely not announced the entire cast. There is more to come.”
What else does the Encore footage reveal?
The TVA and collapsing universes
Disney reports that TVA characters watch incursions and universes collapse. Russo described the footage as showing “the end of thousands of universes in seconds” and called it “the end of times.” Those are the filmmaker’s descriptions of what the sequence depicts; they do not identify the cause of the incursions or explain how the TVA responds.

Steve, Peggy and Loki
The added scene continues the Steve-and-Peggy ending, with Loki arriving. The cited coverage does not disclose what happens after his arrival, or how that moment connects to the footage of Doom and Banner.
