Tony Dokoupil’s first regular weeknight broadcast as anchor of CBS Evening News included an on-air stumble on January 5, 2026: he began introducing Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, then corrected himself as the program moved to a story about Sen. Mark Kelly. He joked, “First day. First day, big problems here.” Barrett Media reported that the moment was absent from a later full-show YouTube edition but remained in the audio podcast. That report concerns those later editions—not the live broadcast or every version of the program.
What happened during Dokoupil’s first weeknight broadcast?
On January 5, 2026, Dokoupil was anchoring his first regular weeknight CBS Evening News broadcast. During a transition, he referred to Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz before correcting to Sen. Mark Kelly as the on-screen story changed. He acknowledged the mix-up on air: “First day. First day, big problems here.” Reports describe the moment as a brief stumble before the broadcast continued with the Kelly item. Barrett Media, Fox News and Just Jared reported on the incident.
Which version reportedly omitted the moment?
Barrett Media reported on January 6 that the later full-show YouTube edition did not include the stumble, while the audio podcast version still did. The report distinguishes between those subsequent editions; it does not establish that the moment was cut from the live broadcast or removed from every version of the show.
Was a teleprompter problem confirmed?
No. Fox News described an apparent teleprompter issue, but the available reporting does not independently confirm the technical cause. The reports corroborate the mismatch between the Walz reference and the Kelly story, not what caused it.

Did CBS explain the edit?
The available sources do not establish an official CBS explanation. Just Jared relayed an explanation attributed to Entertainment Weekly: that addressing issues from an East Coast live feed in a subsequent West Coast telecast is standard practice. That is secondary reporting, not a direct CBS statement, and should not be treated as CBS’s confirmed rationale for this edit.
