Buddhist Lent Day refers to the beginning of Vassa, the roughly three-month rainy-season residence observed by Theravada Buddhist monastics. In Thailand it is called Khao Phansa. Despite the English name, it is not the same observance as Christian Lent: Vassa is principally a monastic retreat, while lay Buddhists may take part through local customs or voluntary commitments.
What is Buddhist Lent?
Vassa, also known as the Rains Retreat, is a period when fully ordained Theravada monks take up residence at a chosen monastery or dwelling. They are expected to remain there during the retreat, with allowances for necessary travel. The Thai name is Khao Phansa. “Buddhist Lent” is a familiar English label, but it can mislead: Dhammathai.org says, “Buddhist Lent, however, bears no similarity to the Christian Lent.”
The observance is associated with the rainy season. Thailand’s National Office of Buddhism explains that the residence period lets monks avoid difficult travel and the risk of trampling crops, while making time for study and shared practice. Dhammathai.org notes that rainy-season residence among ascetics existed before the Buddha and describes the Buddha’s rule for the Sangha; these are source-attributed explanations rather than a single uncontested account of the observance’s origins.
When does Buddhist Lent begin and end?
There is no fixed Gregorian date shared by all Buddhist communities. In Thailand, the usual calendar rule places the beginning on the first day of the waning eighth lunar month and the close on the full moon of the eleventh lunar month. A leap-month year can shift the entry month. The Theravada Buddhist Council of Malaysia also describes ordinary and later entry periods for Vassa, so the observance may not begin on one date everywhere.

What happens during Vassa?
Monastic residence
Monks formally commit to dwell at a selected monastery or dwelling during the retreat. The Theravada Buddhist Council of Malaysia describes a later-entry option and an allowance for necessary travel, provided the monk returns within a week. Thailand’s National Office of Buddhism also describes exceptions for necessary absences. The residence commitment is the central practice; Vassa is not simply a festival day.
Lay participation in Thailand
Lay customs vary by community and are not a universal checklist of obligations. Thai sources describe visiting temples, making merit, giving alms, listening to sermons, and offering candles or rain robes to monks. Some people choose additional precepts, abstinence, meditation retreats, or temporary ordination. Thailand’s National Office of Buddhism also describes a national campaign encouraging people to abstain from alcohol during the period. These are examples of Thai practice, not rules binding on every lay Buddhist.

Ubon Ratchathani’s Candle Festival is a notable Thai observance associated with the season. Candle offerings and public celebrations are regional customs, not required features of Vassa worldwide. Other Theravada communities, including those in Sri Lanka—where the season is known as Vas—observe the rains retreat according to local traditions.

The Theravada Buddhist Council of Malaysia describes Pavarana as the closing ceremony of Vassa. At it, monks invite fellow monks to point out faults. Kathina follows after Pavarana: during a period ending at the next full moon, monasteries hold robe-offering ceremonies on different days. The principal offering is a robe to the Sangha. Kathina is connected to the season’s close, but it is not the same event as the three-month retreat, and customs should not be assumed identical across Buddhist traditions.
