Across ten songs, intimate reflections sit beside political unease and full-band force. The album’s defining tension is also its argument: returning to yourself need not mean leaving everyone else behind.
What is Returning to Myself about?
Released October 24, 2025, on Interscope Records and Lost Highway, the album is Carlile’s first solo project in four years. Apple Music lists ten tracks and a total running time of 43 minutes. Its producers are Carlile, Andrew Watt, Aaron Dessner and Justin Vernon.

Carlile has said she is not naturally inclined to spend time alone with herself. In an artist statement reproduced by Universal Music Canada, she describes choosing a kind of solitude that still includes loved ones nearby. She asks, “Why is it heroic to untether, when the tense work of togetherness is so much more interesting?” Her point is not that solitude is pointless; rather, the people around her are part of what gives life meaning and helps make a return to herself possible.
That framing gives the title a productive ambiguity. The album looks inward, but it does not treat identity as something formed in isolation. The title-track lyric quoted in the Associated Press review makes the connection explicit: “Returning to myself is just returning me to you.”

How do the arrangements shape the album?
The record moves between quieter, close-up textures and larger rock arrangements, so “introspective” does not mean uniformly stripped-down. Americana Highways reviewer Andrew Gulden hears more keys and synths, prominent acoustic guitar and a less forceful vocal approach than Carlile’s often full-throated style. The Associated Press review likewise describes sharply contrasting moments, from a soulful piano-led song to a roaring ballad.
The production credits span Dessner and Watt as well as Carlile and Vernon, but the available reviews do not establish a clean, track-by-track division of their sonic roles. It is more useful to hear the album’s contrasts as a whole: restraint and lift, acoustic intimacy and electric scale, personal reflection and public concern.

Which songs stand out?
“Returning to Myself” and “Human”
In an Apple Music interview, Carlile recalls writing “Returning to Myself” as a poem while alone in a bedroom at Aaron Dessner’s Long Pond Studio. She says she felt stressed by being alone and wondered at first whether she was indulging herself. That account fits the album’s central tension without reducing the song to a simple endorsement of solitude.
She describes “Human” as taking up the recurring feeling that each generation is living at the end of the world, while pairing activism with the need to live in the present. The AP calls it an anthemic electric-guitar ballad. It is one of the record’s clearest turns outward, where private reflection meets collective anxiety.
Rank #3
“A Woman Oversees” and “Joni”
The AP describes “A Woman Oversees” as soulful, with Carlile’s voice set against Rhodes piano; Americana Highways calls it understated. The difference in emphasis points to a performance that can feel both emotionally rich and deliberately restrained.
“Joni” brings the album’s inwardness into contact with Carlile’s musical influences. Elise Ryan of the AP singles it out as a song worth returning to. That is a reviewer’s judgment, not a claim of consensus, but it makes “Joni” a compelling focal point for listeners interested in the record’s conversation with artistic inheritance.
Rank #4
“Anniversary” and “You Without Me”
Reviewers diverge sharply on “Anniversary.” The AP’s Elise Ryan says she would skip it, while Americana Highways describes it as soft and double-tracked. The disagreement is a useful reminder that the album’s quieter choices may land differently depending on what a listener wants from Carlile’s voice and songwriting.
Both reviews hear “You Without Me” as reflective: the AP connects it with children becoming independent, while Americana Highways calls it meditative. Americana Highways also reports that Elton John and Bernie Taupin co-wrote the song, with John playing Rhodes piano. Those credits give the track a notable collaborative dimension within an album concerned with family, identity and changing relationships.
Best Value
“Church & State”
“Church & State” is the album’s loud counterweight. Carlile told Apple Music that the song began in the studio on the night of the 2024 U.S. election. The AP calls it a roaring ballad; Americana Highways’ Gulden describes it as the album’s biggest rocker and a showstopper. Both assessments underline how the record’s reflective center can open into something forceful and public.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is this a return to Carlile’s roots?
Not in the sense of simply retreating to one familiar sound. The album retains acoustic and intimate passages, but its keys, synths, piano-led moments and larger rock songs make it varied rather than a straightforward return to an earlier formula. Its more revealing return is thematic: Carlile examines who she is through family, artistic influence, collaboration and civic life, not apart from them.
The official track sequence runs: “Returning to Myself,” “Human,” “A Woman Oversees,” “A War With Time,” “Anniversary,” “Church & State,” “Joni,” “You Without Me,” “No One Knows Us” and “A Long Goodbye.” The album’s collaborators include Phil and Tim Hanseroth and SistaStrings, according to Universal Music Canada’s announcement.
How do the reviews differ?
The AP awarded the album four stars out of five, emphasizing its introspection and recurring movement toward connection. It praises “Joni” and “Church & State,” while finding “Anniversary” less successful. Americana Highways focuses on the broader palette and highlights “Church & State” as a major performance. These are distinct critical responses, not evidence of a universal ranking of the songs.

Verdict
Returning to Myself works best as a record of contrasts rather than a single-minded statement: solitude with company nearby, restrained singing beside rock-scale release, and personal concerns alongside political ones. Its central idea—that self-knowledge can be shaped by connection—gives the varied arrangements and songs a coherent thread without making them all sound alike.
