She had been content away from movies, she explained, but trusted Foxx as a collaborator and did not want to return with someone unfamiliar.
Why Jamie Foxx mattered to Diaz’s decision
In an interview with Netflix Tudum’s Skip Intro host Krista Smith, Diaz described the choice as specific to this project, not as a general decision to resume acting. She said she had been happy stepping away from film work and had not expected to make another movie. The familiar partnership with Foxx made the prospect feel right.
“If I haven’t done a film in 10 years, if I’m going to go back to doing what I really was happy stepping away from, then who I do it with is really, really important,” Diaz said. She added that she knew what she would get from Foxx “as a partner, as a professional, as a talent,” before concluding: “If I’m going to do it, Jamie’s the guy.” Netflix Tudum’s interview with Diaz is the source for her account.
That makes Foxx a major reason in Diaz’s own explanation, not proof that he alone caused her return. Her comments describe weighing a particular colleague and project after a long period away from movies.

The film that brought Diaz back
Back in Action is a Netflix action comedy starring Diaz and Foxx as Emily and Matt, former CIA spies who have started a family. When their cover is blown, they are drawn back into espionage. Netflix credits Seth Gordon as director and Gordon and Brendan O’Brien as writers. Netflix’s film page gives the premise and identifies the film as available on the service.
Netflix describes Diaz’s time away as almost 10 years; the phrase “10 years” in her interview is a rounded description, not an exact count of elapsed months. For release-era context, the Associated Press reported a 114-minute running time and a PG-13 rating for violence, suggestive references, strong language, and brief teen partying in its January 17, 2025 review.

What Diaz said about returning to a film set
Diaz compared resuming the work to “riding a bike.” Netflix also reported that she recalled knowing how to hit her mark and what to ask the cameraman. These were her own reflections on returning to a familiar kind of work, rather than an outside assessment of how the transition went.
The project’s production context is documented in Netflix’s February 8, 2023 announcement, which names Diaz and Foxx among the cast and identifies the film as their collaboration.
