Weiss later said she had entered 375 while her oven was set to Celsius—not Fahrenheit. That explanation differs from the blame in her original post, which targeted Marie Callender’s.
How the pie became a meme
On November 25, 2021, Sharon Weiss posted a photograph of a badly burnt Marie Callender’s pumpkin pie on the company’s Facebook page. Know Your Meme records the caption as: “Thanks Marie Calendar for ruining thanksgiving dessert.” The original post has since been deleted, so the surviving account rests on screenshots and later reporting. Know Your Meme’s entry documents the post and its early circulation.
The company’s representative reportedly apologized in the comment thread and offered to help. But the image and the mismatch between the complaint and the pie’s appearance quickly became the joke. Screenshots spread after the original post disappeared.
The early spread
Know Your Meme reported that an Imgur compilation of screenshots drew more than 142,000 views in two days. A Facebook group dedicated to jokes about the pie, created December 1, 2021, reportedly passed 27,000 followers soon after. These are historical figures from the meme’s initial spread, not current view or membership counts.

The meme has resurfaced around Thanksgiving, when a burnt holiday dessert and the story behind it fit the season. A 2024 Know Your Meme explainer describes that recurring attention: What Is the “Sharon’s Burnt Marie Callender Pie” Meme?
What Sharon Weiss later said went wrong
Weiss later explained that her oven had switched from Fahrenheit to Celsius. She said she entered 375 intending to follow a Fahrenheit temperature, but the oven interpreted the setting as Celsius. After another dish also burned, her husband noticed the unit setting. Weiss’s explanation was reported in a later account of a CNET interview, reproduced by Faurit, and summarized by The Daily Dot. Faurit’s reproduction of the CNET interview report quotes her saying, “Somehow, some way, the baking temperature had been changed from Fahrenheit to Celsius.”

The account describes 375°C as equivalent to about 707°F. That is a conversion of the setting Weiss said she entered, not a verified measurement of the oven’s actual temperature. The sources do not establish that the oven reached precisely 707°F.
Know Your Meme reported the pie’s directions as 375°F for 70–80 minutes. The package was not independently examined in the reporting available here, so treat that as a reported instruction, not a confirmed current label or general baking recommendation.

Marie Callender’s initially answered the Facebook complaint with an apology and an offer to help, according to Know Your Meme. The exchange did not remain only a customer-service moment: the brand later joined the joke.
The Mary Sue reported that the company used the hashtag #SharonSomePie in a holiday post on December 20, 2021. A later account says Weiss also appeared in a National Pie Day promotion in January 2022. The Mary Sue’s coverage of the holiday post describes the brand’s playful turn.

What the story does—and does not—show
The key distinction is between Weiss’s initial accusation and her later explanation. She first blamed the pie in the Facebook caption; later, she said the oven’s Celsius setting caused her to use a much higher temperature than intended. The available accounts support that as her explanation, not as an independently tested reconstruction of the oven or pie.
In 2024, Weiss reflected on the unexpected attention in a quote reported by The Daily Dot: “Who knew a burnt pie could take on the world?” The Daily Dot’s account revisits who Weiss is and why the image became a Thanksgiving meme.
