CNN chief media analyst Brian Stelter was discussing President Donald Trump’s lawsuit against The Wall Street Journal when his five-year-old son, Story, briefly appeared in the corner of his frame during a live interview on July 20, 2025. Host Jessica Dean acknowledged the child as the segment wrapped; Stelter apologized and said it was bedtime at his home.
What happened during the CNN interview?
Stelter joined CNN Newsroom host Jessica Dean remotely on the Sunday-night broadcast. As they discussed Trump’s lawsuit against The Wall Street Journal over its reporting related to Jeffrey Epstein, Story’s smiling face appeared briefly in the lower-right corner of Stelter’s frame. The conversation continued, and both adults appeared amused. TheWrap’s account of the exchange describes the moment and its context.
TV Insider reported that Stelter appeared to be in a studio, but that his son’s entrance into the shot made the home setting apparent. TV Insider’s report identifies the child as Story and gives his age as five.
What did Stelter and Dean say?
As they signed off, Dean referred to the child as Stelter’s “little helper” and said, “And I think you had a little helper with you, too, so give our thanks to him.” Stelter replied, “I apologize for my 5-year-old,” then added, “It’s bedtime here at the Stelter house.” TheWrap reported the on-air exchange, which ended the moment without disrupting the discussion in any substantial way.
