The headline appears to refer to Jensen Ackles returning as Russell Shaw in CBS’s Tracker, not to a confirmed new role. TV Insider reported on August 18, 2026, that Ackles will reprise Colter Shaw’s brother in Season 4. The report describes a favor Russell needs and a problem involving one of his friends.
Who does Jensen Ackles play in Tracker?
Ackles plays Russell Shaw, the brother of series lead Colter Shaw, played by Justin Hartley. Russell is an established recurring character; the available reporting identifies his Season 4 appearance as a return, not a newly announced role. TV Insider’s August 18, 2026 report is the source for the casting update and story details.
What is Russell’s Season 4 story?
According to Hartley as quoted by TV Insider, Russell needs a favor from Colter and his skill set. The brothers team up to address a problem Russell has encountered, one that also involves a friend of his. Hartley put it this way: “So, the two brothers work together to solve this problem that Russell’s found himself in — and one of his friends, too.”
Hartley also connected the return to the previous season’s ending: “We left him in a place where he was doing something for Colter — keeping a secret from him, but for Colter’s own good.” That is Hartley’s explanation as reported by TV Insider; it should not be mistaken for dialogue or footage from CBS’s preview.

What did CBS’s “First Look” reveal?
CBS describes CBS Fall First Look as a seasonal preview of new and returning series. Its 2026 episode is dated September 10, ahead of CBS Premiere Week beginning October 4, 2026. The linked video could not be verified, so its specific images, dialogue, or any Russell Shaw footage cannot be confirmed here. The reliable character and plot details above come from TV Insider’s report, not an independently verified viewing of the preview.
How does Russell’s return connect to the previous season?
A prior TV Insider report says the CBS description for the Season 3 finale had Colter and Russell searching for a victim of a research project. That offers context for their previous on-screen storyline; it does not establish the details of Russell’s Season 4 problem. TV Insider’s Season 3 finale report covers that earlier setup.
