It is presented by publisher Penguin Random House as a guide for people caring for a loved one with dementia.
What is Emma Heming Willis’s book called?
The Unexpected Journey: Finding Strength, Hope, and Yourself on the Caregiving Path is written by Emma Heming Willis, Bruce Willis’s wife. The publisher describes it as a supportive guide for dementia caregivers, drawing on Heming Willis’s own experience and what she learned from other people.
The book’s subject is caregiving, including the emotional and practical challenges of supporting someone with dementia. It is a personal and educational resource, not a substitute for medical advice tailored to an individual or family. Penguin Random House’s listing provides the publisher’s description.
How the book grew out of the 2024 announcement
In February 2024, The Associated Press reported that Heming Willis was preparing an untitled book for publication in 2025 through Maria Shriver’s imprint, The Open Field, at Penguin Random House. That announcement described a project combining personal stories with interviews and advice from experts. The project was subsequently identified as The Unexpected Journey.

Bruce Willis was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia (FTD) in 2022, according to Heming Willis’s official author page. The book’s focus reflects her experience as a family caregiver; it does not make her account a clinical guide to diagnosing or treating FTD.
In the AP report, Heming Willis said: “Dementia not only affects your loved one but can shake a whole family’s foundation, and self, if you allow it.” She also described how finding useful resources helped her keep moving forward, and her wish to share what she had learned with others. The Associated Press reported the announcement on February 5, 2024.

What caregiving topics does it address?
An Oprah interview listing describes the book as a guide to the complicated experience of caregiving and says Heming Willis interviewed dementia and caregiving experts. The conversation touches on asking for help, looking after caregiver health, FTD, and the emotional realities of caregiving.
Those themes make the book relevant to people seeking both personal perspective and guidance informed by expert conversations. Readers facing medical decisions should still consult their own care team, since a general caregiving book cannot account for a particular person’s diagnosis, needs, or circumstances.

Where can FTD caregivers find support?
Heming Willis identified the Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration (AFTD) as a helpful resource in an AARP interview. She said its support groups gave caregivers a place to speak openly without judgment. People affected by FTD can explore AFTD’s support group information to find current options.
