Bugonia is most gripping when it traps you inside a paranoid hostage standoff. Its satire of conspiracy thinking, corporate power and environmental dread is unmistakable, but Yorgos Lanthimos makes the film’s oppressive tension and cruelty more forceful than its comic bite. Whether that imbalance feels bracing or overbearing depends on how much discomfort you want from a dark comedy.
What is Bugonia about?
Directed by Yorgos Lanthimos and written by Will Tracy, Bugonia follows Teddy and Don, two conspiracy-obsessed young men who kidnap Michelle Fuller, a pharmaceutical CEO they believe is an alien intent on destroying Earth. Emma Stone plays Michelle, Jesse Plemons plays Teddy, and Aidan Delbis plays Don. The principal cast also includes Stavros Halkias and Alicia Silverstone.
The film is a remake of Jang Joon-hwan’s 2003 Korean film Save the Green Planet!, not an original story. The Associated Press describes the adaptation as a blend of science fiction, horror and comedy. It premiered in competition at the 82nd Venice Film Festival on August 28, 2025; Focus Features lists its U.S. release date as October 24, 2025. The Venice Biennale gives its running time as 120 minutes and its language as English.
Why does the thriller outweigh the satire?
A standoff built to wear you down
The central confrontation is less a fast-moving science-fiction chase than a prolonged contest of suspicion and control. In The Atlantic, Shirley Li describes the film as a subdued, bleak chamber drama: long takes and an oppressive, metronomic score make the hostage situation feel like a paranoia-fueled war of attrition. Repetition is part of the method. Exchanges can test the viewer’s patience, but the pressure gives the performances room to register.

That restraint distinguishes the film from the original’s knotty twists and maximalist visual flair, as Li notes. Rather than leaning chiefly on surreal excess or overt comic release, Lanthimos keeps the viewer close to a tense, increasingly uncomfortable human encounter. The premise invites absurdity; the staging makes it hard to relax into a joke.
The satire has a target, but not every critic finds it sharp
Bugonia brings conspiracy belief into collision with corporate power, environmental dread and human cruelty. Li identifies wealth inequality, online conspiracism and climate anxiety among its topical concerns. At Venice, Lanthimos told the AP: “Not much of the dystopia in this film is very fictional,” adding, “A lot of it is very reflective of the real world.” That is the director’s framing, not a guarantee that the satire lands cleanly.

In TIME, Stephanie Zacharek finds the film punishing, arguing that its cruelty and arch, self-congratulatory posture blunt its satire. The disagreement is useful: the same bleak control that gives the standoff its nerve can make the commentary feel insistently grim. The film’s comic moments do not necessarily release that pressure; sometimes they sharpen the unease instead.
Do the performances make the bleakness worthwhile?
Stone and Plemons are the film’s strongest counterweight to its deliberately abrasive tone. Li finds unexpected poignancy in their performances, even as she describes the repeated exchanges as potentially endurance-testing. Zacharek, despite her reservations about the film’s approach, also recognizes both actors as gifted performers. Their work gives the confrontation emotional texture without making it comfortable.

The result is less a satire that neatly punctures its subjects than a performance-driven chamber piece that keeps its characters—and the audience—under pressure. If you value controlled tension and uneasy character work, that focus may be the film’s strength. If you want the satire to cut through the cruelty with greater clarity, its severity may feel like an obstacle.
How disturbing is Bugonia?
The tone is sustainedly oppressive, and the violence is disturbing. TIME describes torture and graphic gore, while Li calls the finale disturbing. Those details make this a poor fit for viewers looking for buoyant comedy, light science fiction or a conventional thriller that moves briskly from one plot turn to the next. This review does not reveal the ending.
