Bob Dylan in the Alley: The Alan J. Weberman Story is the title of a Claudia Dreifus feature published in Rolling Stone on March 4, 1971—not a verified book title. Its subject, A.J. Weberman, became known for an unusually intense pursuit of Bob Dylan’s work and life, including interpreting songs as biographical clues and rummaging through Dylan’s garbage. The available evidence establishes the feature’s identity and broad historical context, but not its detailed scenes or wording.

Who was A.J. Weberman?

Weberman was an American writer and activist whose intense interest in Dylan made him a controversial figure. A biographical reference credits him with writing the 1969 pamphlet Dylanology, compiling a concordance of Dylan’s lyrics, and publishing Dylan to English Dictionary in 2005. His approach treated Dylan’s songs as clues to the singer’s personal life; that was Weberman’s interpretation, not an established account of what the songs meant.

Later writers Bob Spitz and Jim Curtis rejected or ridiculed some of Weberman’s interpretations, according to the same reference. Their responses underscore the difference between documenting Weberman’s claims and accepting them as fact. Biographical reference.

Why did Weberman focus on Dylan?

Weberman and associates criticized Dylan for what they regarded as a retreat from political responsibility. In this dispute, Dylan’s smiling appearance on the cover of his 1969 album Nashville Skyline became a symbol for critics’ objections. That cover’s role is evidence of how Weberman’s circle framed its criticism; it does not establish Dylan’s intentions or prove that the album caused Weberman’s activities.

What were the Dylan Liberation Front and Rock Liberation Front?

Weberman helped organize the Dylan Liberation Front, a group associated with criticism of Dylan’s perceived political withdrawal. Later, Weberman and David Peel were associated with the Rock Liberation Front. The groups’ aims and claims should be understood as those of their participants and as reported by others, not as neutral descriptions of Dylan’s politics. Biographical reference.

What does “Dylanology” mean in this story?

Here, “Dylanology” refers to Weberman’s intensive study of Dylan’s lyrics and the interpretive work he built around them. The 1969 pamphlet and lyric concordance point to a methodical side of his fascination; his effort to read songs as biographical clues made that work contentious. A concordance records where words or phrases appear. It does not, by itself, prove that a song refers to a particular person or event.

Claudia Dreifus’s Rolling Stone feature is bibliographically identified as published March 4, 1971. The title places Weberman in the world around Dylan, but the title and date alone do not verify specific encounters, scenes, or quotations. No exact wording from the feature is reproduced here. Rolling Stone feature listing.

A documentary titled The Ballad of A.J. Weberman is also referenced as a film about his Dylanologist activities. That identification does not establish current legitimate availability or a particular edition. Biographical reference.
