Mahershala Ali says he has moved on from Marvel’s Blade reboot, ending his involvement in the proposed version without amounting to a formal studio cancellation announcement. Armor Wars remains a planned feature film, but recent reporting describes its development as slowed and uncertain.
What is the current status of Blade?
The Blade reboot announced in 2019 is no longer moving forward with Mahershala Ali. In an interview published July 31, 2026, Ali said: “I feel ready to move on from the Blade questions. Those questions are for them. They didn’t want to do it, so they should answer that question.” He added, “If they wanted to do it, we would’ve done it.” The Guardian reported that Ali confirmed the reboot was no longer going forward, while the Los Angeles Times quoted him describing his involvement as “dead and buried”.
That is strong evidence that the version built around Ali has stalled, not proof that Marvel has formally canceled every possible Blade film. No current replacement actor or revived production was confirmed in the reporting cited here. Ali’s departure also supersedes Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige’s July 2025 statement that Ali was still attached.
Why the Ali version stalled
Blade went through substantial script development. In July 2025, Feige said Marvel had considered four script versions, did not feel confident in the material, and had settled on a modern-day approach. He said the studio wanted the film to feel distinctive rather than simply put Blade in a leather outfit and have him kill vampires. At the time, Feige said Ali remained involved; Ali’s later comments make clear that is no longer the case. TheWrap reported Feige’s comments on the scripts and direction.

Feige expressed regret in July 2026 that the project had not gotten off the ground with Ali, telling the Los Angeles Times: “I am feeling like a gigantic loser and failure that we didn’t get off the ground with Mahershala.” The comments indicate a failed iteration with Ali, while leaving open the separate question of whether Marvel might eventually recast or restart Blade.
What is the current status of Armor Wars?
Armor Wars was announced as a Disney+ series and later redeveloped as a feature film. The 2022 announcement described James Rhodes, also known as War Machine, confronting the consequences of Tony Stark’s technology falling into the wrong hands. Don Cheadle was expected to reprise Rhodes, and Yassir Lester remained attached as writer. Variety reported the change to a film, the creative attachments and the premise.

The existence of an announced premise and named creative team does not establish that a film is in production. A 2025 update based on comments from Marvel executive Nate Moore described the project as slowed and its eventual production as uncertain. Collider reported Moore’s update. The available reporting does not establish a cancellation, a production start, or a release date.
What the comic connection tells us
Variety identifies the source material as a seven-issue Marvel Comics arc written by David Michelinie and Bob Layton in 1987 and 1988. That establishes the story’s comic-book connection, but it does not confirm how closely a finished film would follow the arc.

How to read the two projects’ uncertainty
