Its most affecting choice is to let Bergling’s own voice guide the story, alongside home movies, private archival material and the recollections of people who knew him. That approach makes the film feel personal rather than simply a chronicle of fame—and gives the title’s promise of a stirring portrait substance.
What makes Avicii – I’m Tim feel personal?
Netflix describes the film as a portrait of the person behind the stage name: Tim Bergling. The feature draws on home movies and a large private archive, and Bergling narrates the story himself. Family members, artist colleagues and close friends also contribute their perspectives. The combination shifts attention from the public image of Avicii to the person whose life and work shaped it.

Director Henrik Burman told the Associated Press that he wanted to make “an intimate and personal story and not speculate.” AP reported that the project took time, in part to allow family and friends space before participating, and that much of Bergling’s narration comes from archival interviews, including previously unpublished material. Burman said he hoped longtime fans would gain “a new, fresh perspective of Tim as a person and Avicii as an artist.” Those are the director’s aims, not a guarantee that every viewer will experience the film in the same way.
What does the film cover?
Netflix’s synopsis traces Bergling from his birth in Stockholm in 1989 to his death in Oman in 2018. The film’s emotional weight comes not only from knowing how his story ends, but from following the life and creative development that came before it. AP’s account describes a documentary attentive to his early life, music and relationships, rather than one organized solely around his death.

- Avicii's sophomore album, Stories, was released in 2015 and features the singles, "Waiting for Love," "For a Better Day," "Pure Grinding," and "Broken Arrows
That distinction matters. A portrait of an artist who died young can easily turn into a retrospective defined by its ending. Here, Bergling’s narration and the personal archive offer another route into the story: the making of the music, the people around him, and the life behind a global stage name. The film’s intimacy is the reason its subject can feel more than a tragic headline.
How does it compare with Avicii: True Stories?
Avicii: True Stories, directed by Levan Tsikurishvili, is a separate earlier documentary. Its official description emphasizes years spent following Bergling and footage covering his beginnings, success, touring, and physical and mental health struggles. Tsikurishvili said he wanted to make “a brutally honest film about Tim as a person and not only about Avicii.” That statement describes his intention for the earlier film; it is not an independent verdict on either documentary.

| Film | What its official description emphasizes |
|---|---|
| Avicii – I’m Tim (Netflix) | Bergling’s own narration, home movies, a private archive, and the perspectives of family, friends and artist colleagues. |
| Avicii: True Stories | Years of following Bergling, with a focus on his beginnings, success, touring, and physical and mental health struggles. |
The two films offer different entry points: the earlier documentary foregrounds the career and touring experience, while Netflix’s film foregrounds Bergling’s voice and personal archive. One does not make the other redundant; viewers interested in the full picture may find the contrast useful.

Tim: The Official Biography of Avicii by journalist Måns Mosesson is a separate option for readers who want a book-length account.
