Spoilers: This review discusses the season’s first half without revealing the ending. A separate section below contains a clearly marked Season 4 finale spoiler.

Violet is Bridgerton Season 4’s real catch. That is one critic’s verdict, not a claim that Benedict and Sophie lack chemistry: the season’s central romance is appealing, even as its familiar Cinderella-shaped setup and Benedict’s behavior make it less fresh than it could be. This assessment keeps its focus on the first four episodes, the scope of TechRadar’s February 26, 2026 review, rather than treating that reaction as a judgment on all eight.

What is Bridgerton Season 4 about?

Season 4 puts Benedict Bridgerton, played by Luke Thompson, and Sophie Baek, played by Yerin Ha, at the center of its romance. At Violet’s masquerade ball, Benedict meets a masked woman he calls the Lady in Silver. He does not realize she is Sophie, a maid whose social position stands between them. Netflix frames the season as a fairy-tale-inspired love story shaped by that divide, and identifies Julia Quinn’s third Bridgerton novel, An Offer from a Gentleman, as its inspiration. “Inspired by” is the right description: it does not promise a scene-for-scene adaptation. Netflix Tudum’s Season 4 overview sets out the premise and book connection.

Is Season 4 worth watching?

If you watch Bridgerton for sumptuous period-romance spectacle and a couple with an easy spark, the first half offers reasons to stay. If you want the series to reinvent its romantic formula, its opening four episodes may feel too familiar. The tension is not whether the fairy-tale premise works at all; it is whether the show does enough with the gap between the fantasy of the masked encounter and Sophie’s everyday reality.

The romance has chemistry, but Benedict can frustrate

TechRadar’s February 26 review finds the Benedict–Sophie chemistry compelling while criticizing the first four episodes’ familiar structure and Benedict’s immaturity. That distinction matters: attraction can hold attention without making every choice by the characters satisfying. The romance gives the season its emotional center, but Benedict’s conduct can make him a less convincing prize than the story’s fairy-tale framing suggests.

The familiar formula is both comfort and limitation

In its January 29 review, TIME also sees a well-worn template and supporting plots that move slowly. It praises the costumes, balls, family dynamics, Julie Andrews’ narration and the leads’ chemistry. Those are TIME’s judgments, not evidence of audience consensus. Together, the two reviews point to a season whose pleasures lie more in the established Bridgerton mix of romance and visual abundance than in surprise.

Why Violet is the season’s real catch

For TechRadar’s reviewer, Violet is the season’s “catch”—the person who makes the strongest impression—rather than Benedict. That is a critic’s preference, not the show’s official billing: Benedict and Sophie remain the leads. The distinction makes sense if “catch” means more than the romantic hero. Benedict’s behavior can undercut his appeal, while the season’s broader family world gives Violet room to stand out. The first-half review’s verdict is therefore not that the central couple fails, but that another character proves more compelling.

Does the Cinderella story give Sophie agency?

The masked-ball setup and the romance across a class divide make the Cinderella resemblance hard to miss. But Sophie’s social position is not merely decorative: it is a real obstacle in a world where Benedict and Sophie do not enter the relationship on equal terms. Netflix showrunner Jess Brownell says, “Sophie is not a normal damsel in distress in the book, nor is she in our season.” That stated intention points toward agency rather than a passive rescue story; the first-half criticism of the familiar structure leaves a separate question of how fully the episodes realize it.

Luke Thompson describes the season’s central tension as “the struggle between a proper old-school fairy tale — the romance of it — and the actual reality of the world.” Both quotations come from Netflix Tudum’s Season 4 coverage. The contrast is the most useful way to read the romance: the fantasy draws Benedict toward the Lady in Silver, while the reality of Sophie’s status complicates what a happy ending requires.

What the first-half review can—and cannot—tell you

TechRadar’s review evaluates the first four episodes, not the completed season. It can support a verdict on the opening half’s formula, chemistry and character dynamics; it should not be presented as a review of all eight episodes or as proof that the second half resolves those concerns. Netflix says the season has eight episodes, released in two parts of four, and its overview says both parts are available on Netflix. Catalog availability can change, so check Netflix in your region for current access details. Netflix’s release-date coverage details the two-part rollout.

Rank #4

Season 4 also received four Emmy nominations, according to Netflix Tudum’s 2026 nomination coverage: for voice-over performance, choreography, period costumes, and period or fantasy/sci-fi hairstyling. Nominations are not wins, and they do not settle whether the story feels fresh. They do, however, underline how much the season’s appeal depends on its performances and period presentation.

Season 4 ending: a finale spoiler

Major spoiler for Episode 8: Netflix says Benedict and Sophie marry in a mid-credits scene. That is a fact about the completed season, separate from the first-half assessment above. Netflix Tudum’s ending explainer describes the finale.

What comes next for Bridgerton?

Netflix identifies Francesca and Michaela as the lead couple for Season 5 in its Season 4 overview. That announcement gives viewers a reason to look ahead without changing what Season 4 is: Benedict and Sophie’s story, anchored by fairy-tale longing, class conflict and an intentionally familiar romantic frame.
