The contemporaneous reporting traced the consequences from her departure from home in October 2014 to Giant Spacekat’s decision not to attend PAX East in February 2015.
What happened to Brianna Wu during GamerGate?
GamerGate was a contentious online controversy whose origins and stated aims were described differently by contemporaneous sources. PBS NewsHour said the campaign began in August 2014 amid allegations of unethical games journalism and grew to include threats against women in the industry. GamesBeat recorded competing descriptions: a response to threats against female critics, or a grassroots effort focused on games-journalism ethics. Those accounts of stated aims should be distinguished from the threats documented in coverage; the sources do not establish that every participant made threats or identify every perpetrator.
Wu publicly blamed GamerGate participants for the threats, while The Guardian also reported dispute and denials over responsibility. The account is therefore best understood through attributed statements and reporting, rather than as proof that all people associated with the controversy acted alike. Why did Wu leave her home?
In October 2014, The Guardian reported that Wu’s personal details had been posted to 8chan and that she left home after threats appeared. Wu told the paper: “I was literally watching the chat room as the site posted my address and the conversation moved to places that threatened my personal safety.” She said law enforcement considered her decision reasonable: “I made the decision to leave, and law enforcement said it was reasonable.”

The Guardian’s October 17 report also described Wu’s concern that she was being professionally discredited. She expressed a broader fear among women in the industry, saying, “Every woman I know in the industry is scared.” That is her account of people around her, not a measured survey of the games workforce. The Guardian’s report documented the doxxing, threats and her departure.
What personal costs did Wu describe?
Time spent responding to threats
GamesBeat’s February 9, 2015 interview introduction said Wu had spent about one full day each week dealing with law enforcement. That figure describes the publication’s account of her time at that point, not a continuing or independently measured total.

Family and colleagues under pressure
Wu said the threats reached her husband as well: “They threatened to castrate my husband. They’re attacking him all day.” She also described the strain on her employees and her ability to work: “Everything we do is so scrutinized at this point that it’s immensely stressful, for me and for the other women who work for me.” Her remarks connected the personal toll with the pressure surrounding Giant Spacekat’s creative work and the visibility of women making games. Fear amid an unrelated personal worry
In the GamesBeat interview, Wu said she had received 42 death threats in five months. She cited that fear while discussing concern that her dying dog might have been poisoned, but said the fear was not borne out. The 42 figure was Wu’s statement in that interview, not an audited count.

Why did Giant Spacekat withdraw from PAX East?
On February 26, 2015, CBS reported that Wu and Giant Spacekat would not attend PAX East because of specific threats and concerns for staff safety. The report said Boston police and the convention center authority were aware of the threats. CBS attributed a later count to Wu: 47 different death threats in five months. This was reported in a separate context and at a later date than GamesBeat’s 42; the figures should not be treated as a single verified tally. Wu told CBS, “Every single day we fear for our lives.” CBS’s report on the PAX East decision describes the withdrawal and safety concerns.

The coverage records more than online insults: it describes doxxing, threats, Wu leaving home and a later decision to avoid a public convention appearance. It also documents her account of the toll on family, colleagues, studio work and time spent dealing with law enforcement. These are reports and statements from 2014–15; they do not establish later investigation outcomes, corroboration of every threat, the current status of GamerGate, or the present availability of Giant Spacekat’s game, Revolution 60.
