The back half gives Benedict and Sophie the fairy-tale ending their romance has been reaching for, but it does not make their world feel like a fairy tale. Its pleasures come from holding those two truths together: courtship and spectacle on one side, class barriers, danger and complicated choices on the other. The result is a dreamy romantic finish with a darker, less uniformly happy ensemble story around it.
What happens in Bridgerton Season 4 Part 2?
The final four episodes of Season 4 continue Benedict Bridgerton’s search for the masked woman he met at Violet’s masquerade ball. He knows her as the “Lady in Silver”; she is Sophie Baek, a hardworking maid whose social position makes a conventional match with Benedict difficult. Netflix describes the season as inspired by Julia Quinn’s An Offer from a Gentleman, rather than promising a scene-for-scene adaptation.
That divide between the romance Benedict imagines and the social reality Sophie lives with gives the familiar Cinderella-shaped courtship its central tension. Luke Thompson, who plays Benedict, described it to Netflix Tudum as “the struggle between a proper old-school fairy tale — the romance of it — and the actual reality of the world.” His point is a useful guide to the season: the fantasy is part of the appeal, but it does not erase the obstacles.
How does the finale end?
Benedict and Sophie get royal approval
The finale brings the masked-woman mystery and the couple’s class-bound relationship to a resolution. Benedict and Sophie win Queen Charlotte’s approval and become engaged, giving their romance a public path forward.

The wedding comes after the credits
There is one more, deliberately placed payoff: a mid-credits scene shows Benedict and Sophie’s wedding at My Cottage, where their relationship first began to flourish. Anthony serves as Benedict’s best man, and Sophie’s friend Alfie walks her down the aisle. Stay through the credits if you want the complete ending.
Does everyone get a happy ending?
No. The couple’s wedding is a clear romantic payoff, but the finale does not give the entire ensemble the same kind of resolution. Violet ends her engagement to Lord Anderson after realizing she wants to rediscover her independence, while Anderson wants a partnership. Their different needs make for a more bittersweet outcome than the central couple’s.

That contrast is also where the darker turns can weigh on the season’s escapist pleasures. TheWrap’s review framed those turns as a dampener on the latest happy ending, highlighting the question of what happens to everyone else once Benedict and Sophie find their way together. It is one critic’s reading, not a measured consensus, but it captures the trade-off: the wider story adds emotional consequence while sometimes pulling attention away from the central romance.
Is the romantic payoff worth the darker detours?
The finale is most satisfying when it lets the romance be sincere without pretending the surrounding world is uncomplicated. The masked-ball setup, the search for the Lady in Silver and the wedding at My Cottage deliver the recognisable pleasures of a fairy-tale courtship. Sophie’s position as a maid, the couple’s struggle for acceptance and the ensemble’s more divergent endings keep that fantasy from feeling entirely weightless.

Those contrasting tones will not land equally for every viewer. If you want the season to stay focused on the couple and its romantic payoff, the darker turns may feel like interruptions. If you value a romance that has to contend with status, family pressure and other people’s needs, those turns give the happy ending more context. The season’s own framing makes room for both reactions: as Thompson put it, “Both are true. You have to hold both of them — the romance and the reality — in your hand.”
What book inspired Season 4?
Netflix identifies Julia Quinn’s An Offer from a Gentleman as the book inspiration for the season. Yerin Ha has said she approached Sophie as both vulnerable and spirited while developing the character. Viewers curious about the source can read the novel as a companion to the screen story, while keeping in mind that “inspired by” does not mean every plot point or ending is reproduced exactly.
