His sister, Sarah McCardie, said: “Brian loved his work and touched many lives, and is gone much too soon.” The BBC reported that the family described him as a “wonderful and passionate actor.” Neither report established a cause of death; no cause should be inferred from the description that he died suddenly.
His role in Rob Roy
In the 1995 film Rob Roy, McCardie played Alasdair MacGregor, the brother of Rob Roy. His connection to the film is confirmed in ITV News’ report. The part placed him in a historical drama centered on the Scottish folk hero, but the film was one credit in a career that also included prominent television work.

The television role many viewers recognized
McCardie played Tommy Hunter, a crime boss in the BBC police drama Line of Duty. BBC News identified the role in its 30 April 2024 report. He also appeared in series including Time, Outlander, Domina and Rebellion, as well as films such as Filth and The Damned United.

At the time of its 2024 report, BBC News said McCardie was involved in filming Blood of My Blood, the forthcoming Outlander prequel. That is a detail reported at the time of his death, not a claim about the production’s present status.
