After his wife, Melinda Wilson, died in January 2024, Brian Wilson’s longtime representatives asked a Los Angeles court to appoint conservators to oversee his personal and medical affairs. On May 9, 2024, a judge approved the request and appointed publicist Jean Sievers and manager LeeAnn Hard. The ruling concerned Wilson’s person—not his estate—and is now a historical account: Wilson died in June 2025.
Why was Brian Wilson placed under a conservatorship?
The petition followed Melinda Wilson’s death. According to the Associated Press’s account of the February 2024 filing, Wilson’s representatives said a doctor’s declaration described him as having a major neurocognitive disorder and needing assistance with personal needs and medication. Those statements were reported as claims in the court filing, not as an independent diagnosis.
The declaration, as quoted by AP, stated: “Mr. Wilson is unable to properly provide for his own personal needs for physical health, food, clothing, or shelter.”
The family said it had consulted Wilson, his children, his caregiver and his doctors before seeking the order. Its public rationale was to preserve continuity at home and allow him to continue his activities. The family said it wanted to ensure “there will be no extreme changes” and that “Brian will be able to enjoy all of his family and friends and continue to work on current projects.” Those were the family’s stated aims, not findings by the court. Who were Wilson’s conservators, and what did the judge decide?
On May 9, 2024, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Gus T. May approved a conservatorship of the person and appointed Sievers and Hard. AP and ABC reported that the judge said Wilson consented to the arrangement and lacked capacity to make healthcare decisions. At the hearing, May said: “I find from clear and convincing evidence that a conservatorship of the person is necessary.” AP · ABC News
Two of Wilson’s seven children asked that all the children be included in communications and consulted about medical decisions. The judge granted those requested stipulations. News reports described no significant objections and said the parties had reached consensus. Associated Press, May 2024

What did the conservatorship cover?
The petition sought authority over Wilson’s personal and medical affairs, not control of his estate. AP reported that his assets were held in a trust, with Hard serving as trustee, and that the filing said a conservator of the estate was unnecessary. A conservatorship of the person and one of the estate address different responsibilities: the former concerns personal care and medical decisions; the latter concerns finances. Wilson died at age 82 in June 2025. The 2024 order should therefore be described as a past court ruling, not as a conservatorship known to remain active today. The reporting cited here does not establish the case’s formal disposition after his death. Associated Press, June 2025
