Breathless—titled Respira in Spanish—is a fictional Spanish hospital drama set in a public hospital in Valencia. Its first season has eight episodes, and a second season followed in 2025. Netflix said in May 2026 that filming had begun on an eight-episode third and final season; that announcement did not give a release date. Whether it is binge-worthy is a matter of taste, but its emergency-room story, relationships and public-health conflict give viewers several strands to follow.
What is Breathless about?
Created by Carlos Montero, the series is set at the fictional Joaquín Sorolla public hospital in Valencia, where doctors and residents work in the emergency department under professional strain. The story combines medical emergencies with emotional and romantic tensions, then widens into a conflict over Spain’s public health system as a drastic strike enters the plot. These are fictional events, not a report about a real hospital or strike.
Netflix described the series at launch as its first hospital drama in Spain. Its UK catalog synopsis calls it “A passionate medical team is devoted to saving lives in a bustling public hospital where tensions — and romance — keep their pulses racing.” That is the platform’s description, rather than an independent assessment. Netflix’s UK title page classifies the show as a medical, Spanish and social-issue drama.
The subject touches on real tensions around Spain’s public healthcare system, but that does not make the series a documentary. In a September 2024 report, El País said doctors advised the production during script development and filming; the report also framed the story as fictionalized and dramatized, not as a validation of its medical portrayal. Creator Carlos Montero described its heightened approach as “Está todo llevado al límite y es una serie espectáculo” (“Everything is pushed to the limit, and it is a spectacle series”), as quoted by El País.

The official details establish the format and setup, not a measured bingeability verdict or audience result. If a fictional hospital drama that mixes emergency-room work with relationships and a public-health dispute sounds appealing, the eight-episode first season is a straightforward place to begin. For a documentary about Spanish healthcare or a verified account of medical practice, this scripted series is not that.
