The original Remembrance of Earth’s Past trilogy by Cixin Liu has three books, read in this order: The Three-Body Problem, The Dark Forest, and Death’s End. The naming is confusing because The Three-Body Problem is both the first novel’s title and a common shorthand for the trilogy and its wider screen franchise.
What is the correct reading order?
- The Three-Body Problem — volume one
- The Dark Forest — volume two
- Death’s End — volume three
They are a continuing sequence, so volume order is the clearest way to read them. Cixin Liu’s official site gives the original-volume years as 2006, 2008, and 2010, respectively: CixinLiu.com. Those are the original publication years, not dates for every English translation or edition.
Why do the series names vary?
Remembrance of Earth’s Past is the trilogy label used by Liu’s official site and Bloomsbury. The Three-Body Problem is the first book’s title, but publishers and readers also use it as shorthand for the larger series. Macmillan catalogs the books under “The Three-Body Problem Series,” while Bloomsbury’s omnibus lists the same three novels in sequence: Macmillan’s series listing and Bloomsbury’s omnibus listing.
To avoid confusion, use “the trilogy” when referring to all three novels and the individual titles when discussing a particular volume.

The Three-Body Problem
The story moves between the Cultural Revolution and a later scientific mystery. A secret project sends signals into space; an alien civilization receives one and plans an invasion. On Earth, people differ over whether to help the aliens or resist them.
The Dark Forest
Humanity prepares for an invasion centuries in the future. The Wallfacer Project gives selected people the task of developing strategies that they keep concealed in their own minds.

Death’s End
The final novel follows the fragile deterrence between the civilizations and humanity’s prospects over a much longer timescale.
These descriptions orient readers without unpacking later plot developments. The three books form one sequence rather than three alternative starting points.

Is the three-body problem real science?
The title draws on the classical-mechanics problem of predicting the motion of three bodies interacting through gravity. In a 2016 Nature Future Conditional interview, Liu said a paper about this problem inspired him to imagine three suns and ask what kind of civilization might develop on a planet in such a system: Liu’s 2016 interview with Nature.
That inspiration does not make the novel a textbook description of orbital mechanics. Liu distinguished science fiction’s inventions from established science, saying: “The ‘science’ portrayed in science fiction is mixed with a large dose of imaginative speculation, and is no longer, strictly speaking, science at all, but a fictional projection of science.” He also said that, to his knowledge at the time of the interview, astronomers had not discovered a trinary star system moving in the chaotic way imagined by the premise. That is his account from 2016, not a claim about all later astronomical discoveries.

Why does the first book use the Cultural Revolution?
Liu described the Cultural Revolution as necessary background for the story because he wanted a protagonist who had lost hope in humanity. “The Cultural Revolution provides the necessary background for the story,” he said in the 2016 interview. This is Liu’s explanation of his creative choice, not the only possible interpretation of the novel.

Cixin Liu is a Chinese science-fiction writer. The English translations credit Ken Liu for The Three-Body Problem and Death’s End, and Joel Martinsen for The Dark Forest. Macmillan’s catalog and Bloomsbury’s omnibus list those translator credits; Liu also discussed Ken Liu’s work on the first and final books in the Nature interview.

Liu’s official site reports that The Three-Body Problem won the 2015 Hugo Award and Death’s End the 2017 Locus Award. The 2015 Hugo was for the first English volume, translated by Ken Liu and published by Tor, as the Nature interview notes.
What editions are available?
Publisher listings show several ways to get the trilogy. Availability, format, and price depend on region and retailer, so check the listing for the edition you want.

For a complete physical set, look for the trilogy boxed set. If you prefer a single digital volume, Bloomsbury’s omnibus is an ebook edition. Confirm the format and regional availability before buying.
Is The Redemption of Time part of the trilogy?
Macmillan lists The Redemption of Time alongside Liu’s three novels, but credits it to Baoshu, with Ken Liu as translator. It is a related title, not one of the original three volumes by Cixin Liu, and it is not required to follow the three-book sequence. Keep that authorship distinction in mind when a series listing shows four titles.

The phrase “The Three-Body Problem” can refer to the novels or to a screen adaptation, which may lead readers to wonder whether an adaptation represents the entire trilogy. The publisher and author sources cited here establish the books’ order and editions; they do not establish how much of the trilogy any television adaptation covers. Treat adaptation coverage as a separate question from the novels’ reading order.
