Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are reported to be returning for a fourth Mummy film, with Radio Silence directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett at the helm. The directors say they want to keep the series’ adventurous spirit while creating something new for present-day audiences—but that is an ambition, not proof of what the finished film will deliver.
What the directors mean by “not just nostalgia”
In a February 2026 interview with TheWrap, Bettinelli-Olpin described an approach that starts with affection for the earlier films but aims to move beyond simply replaying familiar elements. He said: “And it’s not unlike how we approached ‘Scream,’ is, how do we take this thing that we love as fans, and not turn it into just nostalgia, but actually evolve it and create something new for the for the present day?”
That statement answers the question of intent: the directors say they are trying to evolve the franchise, rather than rely on recognition alone. It does not establish whether the approach will succeed; audiences cannot judge the result until the film is released.
What kind of Mummy film are they describing?
Gillett described the intended tone as “romantic” and “scary,” adding that it “takes some real chances” and is “big and swashbuckling.” Those are the filmmakers’ descriptions, not a synopsis or a breakdown of how much romance, horror, or adventure the film will contain.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The mix points toward the franchise’s adventure-horror roots while leaving room for a different emphasis. Universal describes The Mummy Returns (2001), directed by Stephen Sommers and starring Fraser and Weisz, as an action-adventure about Rick O’Connell and his wife Evie trying to save their son and the world after Imhotep is resurrected. Universal’s page for The Mummy (1999) also lists Fraser and Weisz in the cast. Their reported return therefore reunites the central pairing from the first two films.
Who is returning for the fourth film?
SYFY Wire reported on November 4, 2025, citing Variety, that Fraser and Weisz had signed on and that Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett would direct. SYFY noted that Universal had no comment to Variety at the time. The cast and director news should therefore be understood as reported information, rather than as a direct studio announcement in that early report.

What is known about the story, continuity, and release?
Plot details and the fourth film’s relationship to The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor have not been explained in the reviewed reporting. That means it is not established whether the new film continues, revises, or otherwise connects to the 2008 entry; claims that it ignores or erases that film go beyond what has been disclosed.
LOS40 reported on October 7, 2026, that filming had begun and that Universal had moved the theatrical release date to October 15, 2027. Release schedules can change, and a film-specific date was not available on the reviewed Universal movies page, so treat that date as reported rather than as a current direct studio confirmation.

So, is The Mummy 4 nostalgia bait?
Not according to the directors’ stated goal: they say they want to build on what fans love while making something new, and they have described a romantic, scary, risky, swashbuckling adventure. Whether the film actually balances familiarity with invention remains unknown. Until plot details or the finished film are available, “not just nostalgia” is best read as the filmmakers’ aim—not a verdict.
