What is known about his death?
Fischetti announced Gillis’s death in March 2023, saying he had died the previous day. In the statement reported by Pitchfork, Fischetti wrote: “The first two chapters of the LFO story lost a main character yesterday. Brian ‘Brizz’ Gillis passed away. I don’t have details and it wouldn’t be my place to share them if I did.” Pitchfork and E! News reported the announcement and said no cause was shared.
Why reports give different ages
Pitchfork, E! News and iHeartRadio Canada reported Gillis was 47. The Los Angeles Times reported his age as 48. The reports do not explain the discrepancy, so his age at death is not consistently established. Los Angeles Times

Gillis’s place in LFO’s story and music
Gillis left LFO in the late 1990s, and Devin Lima replaced him, according to iHeartRadio Canada. The group went on to release its self-titled debut album in 1999, which included “Summer Girls.” Pitchfork reports that Gillis’s vocals were used on the album, including on “Can’t Have You.”
Fischetti remembered a relationship that included “moments of great tribulation but also of great joy.” He credited Gillis with teaching him about the music business and how to put together and perform a show, according to iHeartRadio Canada.
