That history is why the scene lands as more than a change of sides. Ichigo sees someone who has been his ally and friend actively helping the enemy advance.
Why does Ichigo think Uryu betrayed him?

So the direct answer is that Uryu appears to join Yhwach because he takes action against Ichigo and helps Yhwach’s advance. At this point in the story, the anime does not give Ichigo—or the viewer—a complete explanation of why.
What does the story reveal about Uryu’s intention?

Episode 40 says the meaning of Uryu’s words to his friends after they separated comes full circle and forms an answer to his intention and motive for joining the Wandenreich. In other words, the series presents Uryu’s allegiance as a genuine-looking defection, then reframes it through the truth he has been pursuing and the meaning of what he said when he parted from his friends. The official summaries establish that eventual explanation and understanding, but do not spell out the complete personal motive or tactical details. It would go beyond those summaries to claim a specific revenge motive or a particular power-based scheme.
