Spoilers for episode 40, “MY LAST WORDS.” Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War Part 3, The Conflict, closes on a confrontation built around one destabilizing question: has Uryu Ishida truly chosen the Wandenreich over his friends? The finale makes that uncertainty its emotional engine, bringing Uryu, Haschwalth and Ichigo together at the moment the season runs out of room for easy answers.
Why the season’s conflict makes Uryu’s choice matter
The Conflict unfolds after the Wandenreich’s second attack transforms the Seireitei into the Schatten Bereich. VIZ describes the broader struggle as the Soul Reapers and Quincies fighting over the city, with the Court Guard Squads reclaiming stolen Bankai and fighting back. That large-scale war gives the finale its pressure, but the episode’s key tension is personal: Uryu’s apparent allegiance puts his friendship with Ichigo under direct strain.
The official episode guide places Uryu’s motives at the center. Haschwalth moves to judge him; Ichigo arrives amid smoke; and Uryu draws his bow toward Ichigo. The guide asks what Uryu intended by joining the Wandenreich and points back to words he left for his friends. It is a potent setup because it makes the apparent betrayal legible without resolving it in advance.
Episode 40 turns the reunion into a question
Episode 40 is titled “MY LAST WORDS.” The official BLEACH: Thousand-Year Blood War episode guide says, “The ensuing explosion and smoke draw Ichigo to the scene, where he is reunited with Uryu.” The scene’s force comes from the mismatch between reunion and threat: Ichigo has found his friend, but the bow Uryu raises makes that encounter look like a break rather than a homecoming.
#1 Best Overall
That image is the finale’s sharpest dramatic choice. Rather than making the central question abstract—whether Uryu has changed sides—the episode gives it a physical form, with Ichigo facing the person he wants to trust and Uryu appearing to aim at him. The official synopsis frames the unresolved motive as the point; the viewer is left to weigh what Uryu’s actions mean against the possibility that his earlier words still matter.
What the two-episode special delivers
VIZ Media announced on December 8, 2024 that the finale would be a two-episode special. Its original schedule placed episode 39 at 7:15 a.m. PT on December 28, 2024, followed by episode 40 at 7:45 a.m. PT. That paired release gives the finale room to function as a culmination and a handoff: the wider war supplies scale, while the final episode narrows attention to the unresolved Uryu–Ichigo relationship.
Rank #2
As a season ending, it is explosive less because the word promises a simple victory or a neatly closed arc than because the story’s image of reunion is charged with danger. Episode 40 leaves the question of Uryu’s true intention active, and that uncertainty creates anticipation for what follows. The cost is deliberate incompleteness: this is a cliff-edge ending, not a final settlement of the conflict.
