This 31-night Halloween movie plan starts with lighter spooky entertainment, moves through suspense and supernatural stories, and saves stronger scares for late October. It is a seasonal watchlist, not a definitive ranking: “Halloween movies” here means films suited to the month, whether or not their stories happen on October 31. Choose by mood and scare tolerance, and swap nights freely.

How to use this 31-day watchlist

The order is designed to build in intensity, with comedy, science fiction and gentler selections breaking up the horror. The intensity cues are broad viewing guidance, not ratings or a substitute for checking a film’s content and local age classification. Household sensitivities differ, so check title-specific details if you need to avoid particular material.

The range is intentional: horror can mean a slasher, a haunted-house story, found footage, psychological suspense, science fiction or a playful monster movie. That breadth also appears in Universal Pictures At Home’s official Countdown to Halloween: 31-Movie Collection, which spans genres including horror, comedy, thriller, sci-fi, suspense, action, adventure, mystery and drama. Its 2025 page lists 31 titles with a combined runtime of 53hr 13min; it is a studio-curated collection, not an objective “best” ranking.

  2. The Ghost and Mr. Chicken (1966) — A comic haunted-house setup makes this an easygoing classic pick. Intensity: mild, with comic scares.

  3. Death Becomes Her (1992) — Dark comedy gives the month a macabre but playful turn. Intensity: mild to moderate; more comic than frightening.

  4. The Frighteners (1996) — A supernatural story with a mischievous streak, useful for viewers who prefer oddball chills to relentless dread. Intensity: moderate.

  5. Sleepy Hollow (1999) — Gothic atmosphere and a ghostly legend make it a seasonal choice even if you are not seeking pure horror. Intensity: moderate.

  6. Shaun of the Dead (2004) — A horror-comedy palate cleanser that keeps the undead in view without making the night entirely grim. Intensity: moderate; comic violence.

  7. Happy Death Day (2017) — A slasher premise with a brisk, playful structure offers a bridge from comedy toward sharper scares. Intensity: moderate.

Days 15–21: Ghost stories and escalating dread

    • After being committed for 17 years, Michael Myers, now a grown man and still very dangerous, escapes from the mental institution (where he was committed as a 10 year old) and he immediately returns to Haddonfield, where he wants to find his baby sister, Laurie. Anyone who crosses his path is in mortal danger.
  2. Ouija: Origin of Evil (2016) — A supernatural story that leans into period atmosphere and escalating possession scares. Intensity: strong.

  3. Rosemary’s Baby (1968) — Psychological and supernatural unease unfold through suspicion rather than constant shocks. Intensity: strong; slow-burn.

  4. The Blair Witch Project (1999) — Its low-key, handheld approach makes uncertainty and isolation do much of the frightening work. Christy Lemire, quoted by the Associated Press, called it “Imaginative, intense and stunning.” Intensity: strong; disorienting found footage.

  5. The Ritual (2017) — A wilderness setting and an unsettling creature story shift the focus from houses and cities to the woods. Intensity: strong.

  6. Crawl (2019) — A contained creature-feature premise makes the threat immediate and easy to follow. Intensity: strong.

  7. The Conjuring (2013) — A traditional haunted-house film with a focus on investigation and character. Associated Press critic Jake Coyle praised Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson’s performances as part of what makes it “something more than your average fright fest.” Intensity: strong.

How to choose by scare level

If you want atmosphere without a hard-horror commitment, begin with Monster High: The Movie, The Ghost and Mr. Chicken or Death Becomes Her. For suspense that grows gradually, try Paranormal Activity, Rosemary’s Baby or The Blair Witch Project. If you want a stronger supernatural or creature threat, choose The Conjuring, The Ritual or The Black Phone. Reserve Hereditary and Evil Dead for an audience comfortable with intense, disturbing horror.

These are editorial intensity cues, not a content-rating system. Confirm current regional ratings and title-specific content information before choosing a film for children, teens or sensitive viewers.

Where to stream these Halloween movies

Streaming rights vary by country and change over time. Netflix Tudum’s 2026 “31 Days of Horror” page and Paramount+ Sneak Peak’s September 10, 2026 list show what those services were promoting in their editorial guides, but appearing in a service’s list is not a guarantee that a film is available to stream in every territory or remains available now. Check the film’s listing in your own country on the day you plan to watch.

Universal Pictures At Home’s collection page identifies its 31-film set as digital. Universal says a digital purchase provides a limited license to access the content and directs buyers to the retailer’s terms. The page does not establish a physical edition or a particular retailer’s current terms.

Why this is a mix, not a “best” ranking

There is no single objective measure of the best Halloween movie: a viewer looking for a playful monster story wants something different from someone seeking sustained dread. The Associated Press retrospective offers attributed critical perspectives on touchstones including Halloween, The Blair Witch Project, Paranormal Activity, The Conjuring, Get Out and Hereditary; those perspectives help explain distinct appeal, not a universal consensus. The strongest month-long plan is one that matches the night’s mood and the people watching.
