Best Streaming Services for Watching Live Sports in 2026: What to Choose and What You’ll Miss

The best sports streaming service depends on your teams, ZIP code, local channels, regional sports networks, and blackout rules—not just channel count.

There is no single streaming service that carries every live sport. The right choice depends on your ZIP code, the channels and regional sports networks that show your teams, and whether you need local, national, or out-of-market games. For a broad cable replacement, start by comparing YouTube TV, Fubo, Hulu + Live TV, and DIRECTV STREAM; for a lower-cost, targeted setup, consider Sling TV with an antenna. Check channel availability and blackout rules before subscribing.

Start with the kind of sports coverage you need

“Live sports” can mean very different things: local NFL games, a regional baseball broadcast, national NBA games, college football, or one league’s out-of-market schedule. Those rights are split among local broadcast stations, national networks, streaming services, and league packages. A large channel count does not guarantee that a service carries your team’s regional sports network or the specific conference channel you need.

  • Live-TV replacements: YouTube TV, Fubo, Hulu + Live TV, Sling TV, and DIRECTV STREAM bundle broadcast and cable channels. Local affiliates and regional sports networks vary by market and plan.
  • Standalone services: ESPN, Peacock, Paramount+, and Max cover selected networks or events, not the full range of sports channels.
  • League packages: NFL Sunday Ticket, NBA League Pass, MLB.TV, and MLS Season Pass can help with specific out-of-market coverage, but do not automatically include every game.
  • Over-the-air TV: An antenna can receive local ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, and other broadcasts where reception allows. It cannot provide cable networks or streaming-exclusive games.

For any service that depends on local stations or regional sports, enter your ZIP code on the provider’s channel checker before paying.

How the main live-TV services compare

Prices and lineups change, and local availability can alter the value of a plan. The figures below are approximate monthly snapshots from a 2025–26 comparison chart, not guaranteed current rates. Check the provider’s current offer, add-ons, fees, and regular price before subscribing. The chart does not establish comparable DVR or stream limits for every plan.

Service Approximate monthly snapshot Best fit Key limitation
YouTube TV About $83 A broad, relatively simple live-TV replacement with local channels in many markets May not carry your regional sports network; add-ons can raise the bill
Fubo About $100 for Pro plus one regional sports network; higher bundles were about $108–$111 Sports-first households willing to check local channel and RSN availability ZIP code, plan, add-ons, and ESPN arrangements matter
Hulu + Live TV About $83 Households combining live sports with Hulu and Disney+ entertainment May cost more than a sports-only viewer needs; local and regional coverage varies
Sling TV About $46 for Orange or Blue; $61 for Orange + Blue Budget-conscious viewers who know which networks they need Local broadcast coverage is limited and market-dependent; add-ons raise the total
DIRECTV STREAM About $108 for Choice; a separate chart snapshot put Entertainment plus Sports Pack at about $100 Viewers prioritizing broad channels and regional sports options Usually a higher-cost choice, with availability and fees dependent on location and package

These snapshots come from a 2025–26 college-football comparison chart and should not be read as a current quote or a like-for-like price test. Promotions, taxes, fees, and regional sports charges can change the amount due. See the chart and its comparison context.

YouTube TV: a strong starting point for a broad package

YouTube TV is a sensible first service to check if you want a single live-TV bundle with major national channels, local-network coverage in many markets, and sports-friendly features such as unlimited cloud DVR and multiview. Its limitations are practical: a particular regional sports network may be absent, and a sports add-on can push the total cost higher. Confirm the exact local stations and networks available at your address before choosing it.

Fubo: for sports-first households

Fubo emphasizes sports across football, basketball, baseball, hockey, soccer, golf, tennis, boxing, MMA, NASCAR, and college sports. Its actual local and regional lineup depends on ZIP code and plan. Fubo’s sports page also describes ESPN Unlimited activation through a Fubo account where applicable; verify that access and the networks included in your specific offer rather than assuming all ESPN products are equivalent. Check Fubo’s sports information.

Hulu + Live TV: sports with an entertainment bundle

Hulu + Live TV combines live channels with Hulu’s on-demand catalog and Disney+ with ads on eligible plans. ESPN Unlimited became an important part of the offer after ESPN’s direct-to-consumer launch in August 2025, but the included tier and terms should be checked for the plan being sold. This bundle is most compelling when your household will use the entertainment services as well as live sports; a sports-only viewer may find a targeted package cheaper.

Sling TV: a lower-cost targeted package

Sling Orange is useful for ESPN-oriented coverage, while Sling Blue carries FOX- and NBC-related coverage in supported markets; Orange + Blue combines the two. Sports Extra add-ons can fill specific channel gaps, but the base price is not the whole cost. Local ABC, CBS, FOX, and NBC availability is limited and uneven, so Sling is often a better fit for viewers who can receive local broadcasts with an antenna and have checked that their essential cable networks are included.

DIRECTV STREAM: check it when regional sports matter

DIRECTV STREAM has a broad sports-channel offering and positions itself around regional sports availability. Its guide names networks including ESPN, NBC, FOX, TBS, FS1, USA, Golf Channel, Tennis Channel, league networks, and regional sports networks, with package and location affecting access. It is not satellite DIRECTV, and its higher potential cost makes a ZIP-code lineup check especially important. Review DIRECTV’s sports-channel guidance.

ESPN Select and ESPN Unlimited are not the same thing

Since August 21, 2025, ESPN has offered direct-to-consumer tiers. “ESPN” can still mean a live-TV provider’s authenticated network access, ESPN+ programming, ESPN on ABC, or one of ESPN’s direct subscriptions, so check the exact access included in a plan.

Tier What it is for What to verify
ESPN Select ESPN+ successor-style programming, including selected sports and events It is not the same as the full linear ESPN network ecosystem
ESPN Unlimited The broader ESPN network offering, including ESPN and additional ESPN networks and services, subject to plan and access rules Confirm which networks and authenticated features your specific subscription provides

ESPN’s launch announcement described Unlimited as bringing together its network ecosystem and ESPN+ programming; its stated sports portfolio included NFL, NBA, NHL, MLB, WNBA, UFC, college sports, soccer, tennis, golf, and WWE. ESPN also announced a launch bundle with ad-supported Disney+ and Hulu at $29.99 per month for the first 12 months. That was a launch promotion, not a standing price. Read ESPN’s launch announcement. For current tier descriptions, see ESPN’s subscription page and its programming information.

Standalone services and league packages

Peacock, Paramount+, and Max

  • Peacock is a targeted option for selected NBCUniversal sports and events. It is not a full live-TV replacement.
  • Paramount+ is useful for CBS Sports programming and selected soccer, but does not cover all major sports networks or regional games.
  • Max is relevant for sports included in the applicable Warner Bros. Discovery offering. Check the current plan and event schedule to confirm what is live.

League packages: useful, but not a promise of every game

League services are often a better starting point than a broad bundle if you follow one team or competition. Their value depends on local-market rules, national broadcast exclusions, postseason availability, and the season’s rights arrangements.

Package Use it to investigate Important gap to check
NFL Sunday Ticket Out-of-market Sunday afternoon NFL games It does not replace local Sunday games or national broadcasts
NBA League Pass Out-of-market NBA games Local and nationally televised games can be blacked out
MLB.TV Out-of-market MLB games, including a whole-league or team-focused use case Local-market blackouts and national broadcast exclusions apply
MLS Season Pass MLS coverage through Apple TV It is for MLS, not a broad sports bundle
NHL out-of-market options Games outside your local market, alongside ESPN/ESPN+ coverage Local blackouts and national coverage exclusions can still apply

Always check the league’s current blackout map and season rules before buying. “Out of market” does not mean “every game.”

Which setup fits each sport?

NFL

Separate local Sunday afternoon games from nationally televised games and out-of-market games. Local Sunday games are generally carried by the local CBS or FOX affiliate. National packages and schedules can include ESPN, ABC, NBC, and FOX; Thursday Night Football is on Prime Video, Sunday Night Football is on NBC/Peacock, and Monday Night Football is on ESPN/ABC. NFL Network and NFL RedZone are separate channel considerations. NFL Sunday Ticket addresses out-of-market Sunday afternoon games, not local or nationally televised games. If your goal is to watch your local team, first verify the local stations and the team’s schedule; if you want a team outside your market, check Sunday Ticket’s exclusions.

NBA

National games are distributed across ESPN, ABC, and TNT/TBS/truTV arrangements during the relevant season, while local games may be on a regional sports network or local broadcaster. NBA League Pass targets out-of-market games, but local and national games may be blacked out. Because rights and distribution can change, check the current season’s schedule and your market before subscribing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

MLB

For local games, start with the team’s regional sports network or local broadcast arrangements. MLB.TV is useful for out-of-market games, but local blackouts and nationally televised exclusions mean it may not solve the needs of a fan watching one nearby team. A whole-league viewer and a one-team local fan may need different combinations.

NHL

ESPN/ESPN+ coverage, national games carried by TNT-family networks where applicable, and local regional sports networks can all matter. An out-of-market package does not erase local blackout rules. Confirm which service carries your team’s local games and which carries the national schedule for the current season.

  • Established Manufacturer: Developed by Channel Master, a long-standing provider of TV antenna technology since 1949, designed for reliable over-the-air TV reception.

College sports

Conference affiliation often determines the required networks. SEC Network and ACC Network point toward ESPN access; Big Ten Network requires a package that carries FOX’s college-sports channel. CBS Sports Network, local affiliates, and other conference channels may require different tiers. ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, ESPN, and The CW can each carry important games depending on conference and season. ESPN’s stated 2025 portfolio included the SEC, ACC, Big 12, the College Football Playoff, and numerous NCAA championships. See ESPN’s 2025 portfolio announcement. Build a list from the conferences and teams you watch rather than choosing on channel count alone.

Soccer

Soccer rights are especially fragmented. Domestic U.S. leagues, Premier League, LaLiga, Bundesliga, UEFA competitions, NWSL, MLS, and international tournaments can require different services. A live-TV bundle may cover some broadcast games, but it is not a substitute for checking the rights holder for the particular league or competition. MLS Season Pass is a targeted MLS option; Paramount+ can matter for selected soccer, and other events may be distributed through broadcast networks or standalone services.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Golf, tennis, and combat sports

Golf coverage may be spread among ESPN, Golf Channel, NBC/Peacock, CBS, and tournament-specific arrangements. Tennis viewers should check the event: ESPN lists the Australian Open, Wimbledon, and U.S. Open among its portfolio, while Tennis Channel and broadcast networks can also matter. UFC events may be split between ESPN programming and other event arrangements; WWE was included in ESPN’s stated 2025 portfolio. For a particular event, verify the current schedule and whether it is included in your tier rather than assuming the sport’s name guarantees access.

Build the least expensive setup that actually works

If you follow one team

  1. Write down whether the games you want are local, national, or out of market.
  2. Check the team’s current local broadcaster or regional sports network by ZIP code.
  3. Compare the league package for out-of-market games and read its blackout rules.
  4. Add an antenna or a targeted standalone service only if it fills a specific remaining gap.

If your household watches college football

  1. List the conferences and teams you follow, then identify whether their games land on ESPN/SEC Network/ACC Network, FOX/Big Ten Network, CBS Sports Network, or local broadcast channels.
  2. Check that a live-TV plan carries every required network at your address; ESPN Unlimited may cover much of ESPN’s ecosystem but does not replace FOX, CBS, NBC, or every conference channel.
  3. Compare the full monthly bill, including the plan tier and any add-ons, with a more targeted mix of services.

If you want a broad sports slate

  1. Compare YouTube TV, Fubo, Hulu + Live TV, and DIRECTV STREAM against your must-have national channels and local networks.
  2. Check whether your regional sports network is included; if not, investigate the RSN’s own options or another provider.
  3. Add league packages only for coverage the live-TV service does not provide, and account for blackouts and nationally televised exclusions.
  4. Compare the actual recurring total, not just the advertised starting price.

A combination of ESPN, Peacock, Paramount+, an antenna, and a league package can cost less than a full bundle for a narrow set of interests, but it also means more apps, billing dates, and separate DVR experiences. The lowest base subscription is not necessarily the lowest cost for the games you want.

Check these details before subscribing

  • ZIP-code lineup: Confirm local ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, CW, and any regional sports network you need.
  • Exact network and tier: Search for each required channel, including ESPN2, SEC Network, ACC Network, Big Ten Network, NFL Network, or TNT-family networks. Do not treat ESPN Select, ESPN Unlimited, ESPN+ access, and authenticated ESPN channels as interchangeable.
  • Blackouts and exclusions: Check the league’s rules for local games, nationally televised events, and postseason coverage.
  • Full price: Note the regular rate, promotion duration, add-ons, regional sports fees, taxes, and any price changes after a trial or promotion. Promotions and trials change and may have eligibility rules.
  • DVR: Check storage, expiration, whether a recording can be fast-forwarded, and whether an on-demand version may replace the recording. If overtime matters, use recording padding where available or record the full program block.
  • Household viewing: Verify simultaneous-stream limits and any distinction between home-network, mobile, and away-from-home streams.
  • Device and picture quality: Confirm that the app works on your TV or streaming device and whether multiview or 4K is available on your device and plan.
  • Billing and cancellation: Record when promotional pricing ends and whether cancellation runs through the end of the billing period.
  • Account linking: If you subscribe through a provider or third party, check whether the sports app needs activation or supports that sign-in method.

If a game is listed but unavailable, common causes are a local blackout, national-game exclusion, missing RSN, or the wrong plan tier. A missing local channel is often a ZIP-code availability issue; an antenna may help where reception is adequate. A stream delay can result from network congestion, device limits, or a local broadcast handoff. A new streaming device cannot fix rights or blackout restrictions.

Choose by the gap you need to close

  • One broad package: Start with YouTube TV, then compare its local and regional lineup with Fubo, Hulu + Live TV, and DIRECTV STREAM.
  • Sports-first lineup: Check Fubo by ZIP code, including the exact ESPN access and regional channels in your offer.
  • ESPN plus entertainment: Compare ESPN Unlimited with Hulu + Live TV and other bundles that include the channels you need.
  • Lowest targeted cost: Price Sling with the specific networks you need and an antenna for local broadcasts where reception works.
  • Local MLB, NBA, or NHL: Check regional sports availability first, especially on Fubo and DIRECTV STREAM.
  • One league: Start with its official package, then identify local and national games it excludes.

Rights, lineups, and prices can change during a season. Use the provider’s current channel checker and the league’s current schedule as the final check before committing.
