What happened to Hinton Battle?
The Broadway League reported that Battle died on January 30, 2024, aged 67. The Washington Post said dancer and educator Leah Bass-Baylis, a family representative, confirmed his death. Neither that account nor the Los Angeles Times reported a cause of death.

How Hinton Battle made Broadway history
Battle made his Broadway debut as the original Scarecrow in The Wiz. He went on to win three Tony Awards for Best Featured Actor in a Musical, each for a different production:

The Broadway League lists the three awards and winning productions in its 2024 memorial announcement. The Tony Awards and American Theatre Wing also included Battle in their 2024 in memoriam.

A career across stage, film and television
Battle’s selected stage credits included Dancin’, Dreamgirls, Chicago and Ragtime, according to the Los Angeles Times. His screen work included the film Dreamgirls and television appearances in Smash, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Quantum Leap and High Incident, among other credits listed by the Television Academy. These are selected roles, not a complete résumé.

The Broadway League announced that theatres would dim their lights for one minute on March 12, 2024, at 6:45 p.m. The League’s Interim President, Jason Laks, explained: “As we continue to remember Mr. Battle’s remarkable talent and array of roles, the decision was made to dim all lights as the most appropriate way to recognize his legacy on Broadway and within our community.”
